Mouth ulcers
« on: November 13, 2011, 08:02:15 PM »
Guys anyone got any tips to sort these annoying things out? I get them about every 2 months and suffer for almost 2 weeks with them to the extent that the glands around my jaw swell up. I can't eat anything slightly salty or acidic while I have them and I've tried most remedies to get rid of them including some OTC meds (pyralvex) and the usual warm salt water rinse. Anything else that I could try?

I have found that they sometimes appear when i'm stressed to the max. According to a dentist friend, mouth ulcers appear when the immune system gets weak and the body becomes acidic. I've also tried OTC meds which normally just numb the pain for a couple of minutes and ten i'd have to re-apply. What works for me is salt. I'll rinse with luke warm salt water which i make very strong, but before i rinse i will put some dry salt in the palm of my hand, wet one finger and apply the salt directly to the ulcer. It burns like hell for 10-15 seconds and then it goes numb. Only after that will i rinse with salt water.
It normally dissapears within a couple of days.

Mouth ulcers...hmmm, I know an Oral Biologist quite well...  duh

Proper name for them is Aphthous Ulcer. Unknown cause. Many causative factors have been linked to them...

Most common cause is stress. (Kids writing exams!!)
2nd most common cause is lack of sleep (which leads to stress!)
Deficiency in Immune system of saliva
Gluten allergy
Milk allergy
Vit B12, Iron, Folic Acid, Zinc deficiencies
Citrus fruits including Oranges and lemons
Peanuts

Best way to prevent these from happening is to take a good Vitamin B Complex supplement every day to boost the Immune system. Avoid any foods that can scratch or traumatize a mucous membrane. Then try cutting the above foods out to try lessen the chances of an ulcer.

Ulcers usually only happen where there is trauma to the mucous membrane of the mouth, even slight trauma. Through hot food, Biting a lip or cheek, trauma through scratching the membrane with Potato chips, toast etc etc. Once the membrane is breached, the Ulcer develops through a deficient Immune system response.

Treatment is paliative... ie: no cure, so just treating symptoms. Find out what works best for you.
The tried and tested, most effective way of treating them is Kenalog in Orabase. This is a CorticoSteroid ointment that helps prevent further inflammation and has a mild anaesthetic in it. Repeated application every few hours helps. There is no better treatment unfortunately.

In between, a mouthwash like Corsodyl, which has anaesthetic and antibacterial properties will help.

I do the same it hurts like hell but it doesn't bother you after a while.
Mine happens with a combination of diet/stress.

Hmmmm I wonder if I can get a doctors note excusing me from exams because stress makes my mouth hurt :hehe: perhaps a prescription for a fishing trip to reduce my stress.
