Its all in the mind. I've lived on the land all my life and dont have "land-legs" although I have been leg-less a few times before!

Best thing for seasickness is tinned mixed veg or lots tinned viennas and speghetti the night before!

I think to some extent its in the mind and keeping busy helps keep it away but definitely not entirely in the mind

Thanks Big Van for the Info...

@Pieter thanks bru, and I think if I try take the HMS Walkers Killer on the ocean I will drown before I get sea sick  :crzy

I guess I must just go for another trip in December...

You're coming with us!  :cgrts: :corrct: :-)
I think I will, what colour is the duck so I know what to eat/drink so when I start chumming at least it matches the colour  :-)

Blue, red and yellow bru. Doesnt look so great, but thats the way they repontooned it a few years back. Next time it needs re-pontooning, I wanna make it Grey or Full yellow.

No bru. We still have our Getaway "Lady Frere"- the one you've fished off. In fact its in PA right now getting its motor serviced. It had to get its carbs replaced :shk , they were corroding a bit- Its cause she only gets started on average 4 times a year. But we do look after her very well. That Yammi is already 22 years old!

Our old boat, our Baronet, "Wild Rover" is with Gordon in EL. He's cut the cabin off. Cant wait to see it. He might bring it through in December. Then we;'' have 3 boats at Cannons!  I'll tow "The Lion"- Dad loves the Lions. haha, down on the 14th of December. When are you heading down?

I guess I am lucky that I have never been sea sick. We used to go out at Struisbaai which is known for it's rough water. My cousin used to get sick all the time but what works for him is to go to bed early and avoid green veggies the night before. He is now able to go and hunt YF in the Cape and not get sick. The cure is different for everyone, the secret is finding yours.
This works for me: I never go to sea without a couple of packets of some sort of sweets. Something with a minty flavour and jelly babies are the  bomb. Ginger biscuits will also help and eat while you are on the boat. Get something in your stomach to help settle it down and keep busy! Look up every now and then if you have to look down and concentrate on something on the deck. This will help orientate yourself again. I also don't drink  before I go out.

Pack some lolli pops on the boat they work wonders :win:

Most skippers on the dive boats carry them for the divers.

Some of the replies really made me  :hyst:   :hyst:   :hyst:

WK - my folks fished commercially and mom always got sick - she couldn't even read in a car! But she just kept going out. Some days she said she was scared she was going to die, then she was so sick, she was scared she wasn't going to die.  Eventually she overcame it and can now read in a car as well. I never used to get sick, but after having the kids, I think nerves got to me and I have gone green around the gills (much to my dad's amusement), but have never actually chummed yet (touch wood). There are lots of remedies, stories, etc - if you suffer from motion sickness I have heard that putting a piece of plaster behind your ear helped - something to do with balance. I have never tried this, btw! One sure recipe for chumming is to have a hangover! Definitely cut out excess alchohol the night before. OH and lay off the carrots!  They are the first and last thing that hit the water!  :hyst:   :hyst:

WK these are the do's and don't i always recommend to my crew if they don't want to get seasick:

Do's:
1 Make sure you have a something in your stomach before you launch, so have a breakfast.
2 Always have something like oranges, apples on the boat. When starting to feel sick have a coke, fanta etc and eat an apple or orange. Sugar in drink stops the light head, and eating seems to take your mind off the seasickness and settles the stomach.
3. If you can take, your prefference of seasick tablets, starting the day before.
4. Positive attitude, don't focus on being sick cause you'll eventually make yourself sick.

Dont's:
1 Don't climb on the boat with a hangover from hell, you are going to get sick no questions.
2 Don't pull an all nighter the night before you launch.Try get a full night's sleep, tiredness/lack of sleep MOST defiantly contributes to people getting seasick.
3 Don't try complete tying your traces etc etc on the boat it's gonna make you chunder. (If you know you have a tendency to get seasick)

Good luck WK, always keep a positive attitude and it will get better.

Take seasick tablets the night before.... Then one when u have ur coffee before u leave the house and one about an hour into the ride....

Stay away from booze night before

Pack very salty tomato sandwiches on whole wheat bread... rye bread even better.

Orange energade

Try to do minimum trace tying onboard where u focus right in front of ur face....

keep busy.... wash off the side of the boat, keep things tidy etc....

This is from a guy that they had to physically stand on my feet so i wouldnt lurch overboard i was chunking so bad, pulling crays not 100m from dry sand... now ive spent a couple of days after eachother during comps out in pretty nasty water, without so much as a burp... some of it might be mental, but lots of it is physical... keep ur stomach busy with salty food and it wont get time to think about hurling!!!  Last night's braai chops works just as good as the tomato zamies....

even if you do chunk, eat immediately after it will settle it, u'll feel swak for about an hour but then you will be sorted.  And if a bad case hits you keep drinking water or cooldrink you don't want to dry heave, you can actually tear ur insides....
Men... what lies ahead on that beach... IMMORTALITY.... TAKE IT IT"S YOURS!!!!!!

On a recent offshore outing, a friend of Strandloper who is in the medical profession, also advised to take salty eats like crisps or biltong on board.
