BIG Bonnie's
« on: November 10, 2011, 07:27:11 AM »
Today I had a charter with 2 guys from Welkom down on a  holiday... the day started off with a 5:00am launch.  Weather conditions looked good SE to SW wind  up to 12 knots with a 1.5 – 1.9m swell.  The  water temp on Number 1 didn’t get above 22.9°C, so the water is still cold.  It was not long before we hit a school of Bonnie’s  and had all 5 lines go... seeing the faces of my Clients is priceless when this  happens, as you can see them looking at the rods to see which one they should  get first and which one is going to have the bigger fish!!!  This time though, they were in luck, as 2 of  the 5 rods had good strong runs.  After clearing  the smaller Bonnie’s they were rewarded with 2 nice 5 - 7kg Bonnie’s… on the  second pass the one reel took off like a jet plane  :sreel: :sreel: .  My first thought was that this is running like  a  :yft: … however after a long and tiring fight, we managed to boat a 9 - 10kg  Bonnie - this was a beaut of a fish and gave us a fight second to none… and one  fish I am sure my clients will never forget.  Later  on in the trip, we boated a few small Slingers and a couple of Trigger Fish  (all released). Total Fish count = 15 x Bonnie’s, 4 x Slingers, 2 x Trigger Fish  … Oh! And another TAXED HAT (the :brnz: seem to like those leather hats!!!)

Will take some time tonight and show you how to rig it!

I see many possibilities for this:

1. Tax evasion rig - when hooking a nice fish, put the teaser (s) hat out to distract the tax man.

2. Teaser rig - strategically place the hat in the spread, preferably on the Up rigger and at the back (70+) out. Ensure that it is popping and diving nicely. This should keep the taxman occupied, however the downside is that you might need a few!

3. Tax Audit rig- this is used when you need a fact to face with the taxman.
At least 250lb leader, some 600lb wire (or clutch cable) and some 80lb tackle would be required. The perfect opportunity to give the taxman a bit of your mind.

Can anybody tell me how to prepare bonnie? I have always just used them for bait. The only two 'tuna' I have eaten is yellowfin and sarda sarda. Bonnie seems so bloody???? :cnfzd

@ Strandloper  :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: Tax evasion.

Can't wait to see the Riggs :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst:

@WK Bonnie's taste much like YFT just they have a much stronger and fishier taste I find that YFT  also has a slightly Sweeter taste when compared to the bonnie. A 5-10KG bonnie is an Adult fish where a 10-20Kg YFT is still a youngster(same as eating younger and older beef.. the younger is much nicer to eat)

For interest sake the  SA record for Bonnie's (aka Eastern Little Tuna, KawaKawa'sor Mackrel Tuna) is 11kg's

If you plan on eating a bonnie step one is to bleed the fish before you cook it...
then prepair the same way you would your YFT or your Sarda Sarda's.

If you are going to eat it the same day then I would bleed it at the boat. if you freeze it first then I would let it defrost in cold water and that helps as well..
