Game fish and Marlin: How to make a 180 degree rig for Kona’s

    The 180 degree rig is one of  my favourite double hook rigs; it is ideal for adding strips baits and swims  true. For Island Lures and Bullets it is one of the best rigs.

1. Materials:
- 1.5mm stainless steel cable
- 6.4mm & 9.5mm  Electrical Heat Shrink (I prefer black, but any colour will work)
- Copper crimps to suit the  1.5mm cable (5 crimps required)
- Stainless Steel Hooks (I  have used 10/0 hooks for the tutorial)

2. Cut a length of cable  about 2.5 times the length required for the completed rig. The length required  will be calculated as follows: Length of Kona skirt from bottom of Kona head,  minus half the hook shank length, minus leader loop and crimp. Feed the cable  through the eye of the hook and wrap around the shank, bring the cable around  the closed side of the hook eye. Bring the loop over and feed back into the  hook eye from the opposite side

3. Pull tight and double  crimp

    4. The rig should look like  this at this point

5.  Cut some 9.5mm heat shrink and slide it over  your cable, and feed it onto the hook for later use.

6. Measure your length and put  a kink in the cable at your length, perpendicular to your hook eye

    7. Feed 3 crimps onto your  cable

8. Push the cable through  your hook, ensuring it will face up.

9. Leave a loop of about  15mm, and double crimp your cable

    10.  Cut the 2 tag ends of the cable so that there  is a 1-2mm gap.

11.  Place the crimp equally over the gap and  crimp only the out sides of the crimp, ensuring that your cable is straight.

12.  Rig should look like this, at this point

    13. Pull the 9.5mm heat  shrink to cover the cable wraps over the hook up to the loop, and use a hot air  blower to shrink over. You can use a lighter, but I prefer the blower.

14. Put a small piece of 6.4mm  heat shrink over the 9.5mm by the hook shank to neaten up.

15. Cut 9.5mm heat shrink to  cover the shank of the front hook, apply heat ensuring that all is straight and  lined up.
You now have your completed 180 Degree Rig.

Nice, but why double crimps, totally unnecessary if the first one is done correctly. I also found that the hook-up ratio with heat shrink in the last hook is very bad, keep the heat shrink in the pulling hook, but do not put it in the trailing hook.

Thanks for your valued input Handro.
Just feels safer with double crimps, and they cause no harm, I prefer the heat shrink on the trailing hook as it makes tying strip baits much easier.
