Author Topic: Game fish and Marlin: How to make a single and 90 degree rig for Kona’s (Read 21833 times)

1. Materials:
- 1.5mm stainless steel cable
- 6.4mm & 9.5mm Electrical Heat Shrink (I prefer black, but any colour will work)
- Copper crimps to suit the 1.5mm cable (5 crimps required)
- Stainless Steel Hooks (I have used 10/0 hooks for the tutorial)

2. Cut a length of cable about 2.5 times the length required for the completed rig. The length required will be calculated as follows: Length of Kona skirt from bottom of Kona head, minus half the hook shank length, minus leader loop and crimp.

3. Feed the cable through the eye of the hook and wrap around the shank, bring the cable around the closed side of the hook eye.

4. Bring the loop over and feed back into the hook eye from the opposite side

5. Pull tight and double crimp

6. Put 3 crimps onto the cable attached to the hook

7. Measure your length and put a kink in the cable at your length, perpendicular to your hook eye

8. Make your loop (at least 1cm) and double crimp

9. Cut the 2 tag ends of the cable that there is a 1-2mm gap.

10. Place the crimp equally over the gap and crimp only the out sides of the crimp, ensuring that your cable is straight.

11. Rig is completed

12. Cut 6.4mm heat shrink to cover the cable from hook eye to loop, and use a hot air blower to shrink over. You can use a lighter, but I prefer the blower.

13. The heat shrink should be nice and tight over the cable

14. Cut 9.5mm heat shrink to cover the cable from the crimps and over the cable twisted around the hook shank, and again apply heat to shrink making sure the complete rig is straight.

16. I like to cut 2 small pieces of 6.4mm heat shrink to close over the small gaps left by the 9.5mm to make the rig a little stiffer and neater.

19. To make the rig a 90 degree rig, add a second hook put over the cable with the hook eye lined up to the cable loop and cover with 9.5mm heat shrink, apply heat ensuring the hook lines up. Place the hook left or right depending on which side of the boat you will troll the lure.

20. The completed 90 degree rig, here your leader loop must pass through the cable and the hook eye.

They are Ok, although I personally prefer a single hook rig or a 180 degree rig.
I will be doing a tutorial on the 180, double hook and 60 degree rigs sometime, and also the single hook stiff rig.

May the poor weather and fishing continue a while longer... The tutorials that FA is coming out with are awesome, but i know as soon as the fishing picks up i'll then be drooling over fishing reports
