John F's DIY: softie rod rack
« on: November 06, 2011, 07:33:51 AM »
I've been looking for a solution to a problem I've been facing for a long time: transporting my rods & reels to and from the boat in my vehicle with minimal scratching and rubbing (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,3440.0.html)!

From the thread above, I got some ideas which I tried and seems like this will work...

Please check the pics...

The problem...

6 rods (30-50 Lb)... all transported horizontally on the back of my Toyota Hilux Surf (Pic 1). The rod butts and reels sit on top of my cushioned 85 L safari chiller (Pic 2). The rod tips usually cross each other and with the bumps and turns during the 1.3 km trip they rub against each other (Pic 3)... <:

Pool noodles

Got 2 pool noodles... one gets 6 holes (12 mm  drill bit) located 22 cm apart (Pic 4).... with a sharp knife, a slit is cut, opening one side, thus connecting the holes (Pic 5 & 6)... this is where the rod will sit...

The second noodle also gets 6 holes (22 mm drill bit) located 22 cm apart (Pic 7).... this is where the rod butts with sit.

After a bit of trimming with a knife this is how the holes look up close (Pic 8).

The two noodles ready to use (Pic 9)...

... the final setup!

The rods stay fixed to the pool noodles and keep a distance from each other (Pics 10 & 11)...

This is not definite but works for my situation.

  Hopefully it will hep others!

Nice idea!

Simple mod to attache the nnodle to the ceiling will see you with a roof mounted equivalent which will allow you to seat guys at the back. Been looking for an idea like this for ages!

Brilliant idea.
I'm going to adapt this for the kayak since the reels take a hammering when stowed inside hull when the water is choppy or when capsizing during beaching (which often happens to me)
