another (sail)fishing experience
« on: November 03, 2011, 09:33:26 PM »
it's been a while since I've logged on to UA...I'm sorry all for being away for too long

I'm still pretending to be a recreational fisherman

it has also been long time since I last went fishing...and I took the opportunity of my brother (Nuno) and a good friend from Italy (Saverio) visit to suggest a fishing trip on their holidays

we chartered Nirvana (Bert) at Ponta do Ouro
meeting time was 6:00 at the beach...and there we were all excited for a first time fishing experience in Africa
Nuno never went fishing...Saverio likes fishing every now and then..we used to charter a boat in Portugal for bottom fishing and his best catch was a 300gr mackerel

all set up...and we launch at 6:15
it was a sunny day, no wind (first time ever for me at Ponta), no waves (again...first time ever), air temp around 20° and water temp around 25°
crossing the surf was easy and around 6:40 lines were out in the sea

Bert has all his gear set up for Sodwana 15000 (I believe starts Monday)
he and his team will fish on 20lbs so we were testing the setup for his competition

just after lines were in the water we found a long liner kit (the gps/buoy, berth and some ropes)...drifted a bit too much and probably the boat didn't care to pick it up..it was close to shore in Ponta Mamoli on the 20mts line
took the lines out of the water and remove the gps/buoy (Bert kept it as a souvenir) and we then dragged the berth to deeper waters so that we could have a structure for wahoo or dorado for a later pass

set up the lines again and we were all ready for action
2 dead bait on couta traces and 2 daisy chains for some bonito/skipjack

after a few minutes  2 reels start screaming and we were on...Saverio hold the first rod and I got the second
Saverio misfortune and lost his fish...I got mine...a skipjack

we then remove 1 couta trace and both daisy chains and set up with striped bait on (you will have to help me here...I have no clew on the lure..but looked like a fruit salad in colors..have a look at the photo)

a few moments later Saverio was on again...again misfortune for him as the tax man took his share of a YFT
we only got his head...we all told him that we was exceeding the 2minute fight limit time around Pinnacles area

all set up again and it was my time to be on...and a saily was on
standing up...on a 20lbs setup...no authorization from Bert to change the drag...it was good fun although I'm a bit sore now
a 30minutes fight that gave a lot of pleasure...Saverio (that didn't knew that we T&R some species) was all happy and yelling...we have dinner!!!
at the end he was very excited to have the opportunity to cuddle with a saily...(not wanting to be selfish I believe I was the happiest on board)

a few hugs later, all set up again and another double strike...it was Nuno and Saverio's turn (i was resting) and after a few minutes 2 YFT of around 7 kg each were in the boat
iupppieeee!!!...all happy with the experience
1 on striped bait, other on rapala

off topic...for their first African experience they had a lot of beginners luck...at KNP during the week we started with 2 lions eating a warthog...then we saw 2leopards on the same tree branch (same said they were just relaxing after a moment of good fun...hehehe)...it was all set up for a big5 day...and indeed it was...we saw 1 more leopard and 1 more lion

so we ask Bert...what are the big5 on fishing?...just to check if we were able to target them
tuna, saily, marlin, wahoo and dorado

ok...we have a tuna and a saily...let's go for the other ones
the moment we finish this chat....reel was screeeeeeeeeeeming...long run...and Saverio was on...for a wahoo...on a striped bait

so..3 species on striped bait...and all on the same lure...wonderful

all set up again and another screaming reel...it was my turn...and a eastern cape tuna (is this the name?) was with us

by this time 10:00 the wind start picking up...NE...and the sea was not flat anymore

a few moments later Nuno was on...and then line start going...and going....and going...he couldn't wind on...and got tired...Saverio took is place...and wind on...and line start going...and going
Bert said...we had a YFT...and we now have a shark...
and after a few minutes...Saverio was told tired...it was Bert time to hold the rod...and we started having a glimpse on a 2mt ish black tip...we brought him close to the boat and cut the leader
Saturday I'll be looking for a rapala pierced shark on my dives

since the shark episode till 12:00 no more strikes...a lot of birds...and lot of activity on the sounder but no strikes

plenty whales, some turtles, and dolphins were sighted...
in the end we all had good fun...
Nuno and Saverio are leaving Maputo on Saturday with a very active 10 days holidays full of good experiences and wishing another trip to Moz (and SA) soon...I'm already sad that they are leaving

following WK quest on "Video Reports?" thread http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,7343.new/topicseen.html#new

here is my contribution

(sail)fishing experience

it is very basic and amateur as I don't have any editing skills...I just add music and collate some pictures and clips from our fishing day

I hope that after the written report and now with the video you are able to identify all the good moments we spent on that day
