Swim bait trace the Nemesis way
« on: August 23, 2011, 07:23:56 PM »
This is the way i usually construct my swim bait trace. For this trace i used 175lb American fishing wire and two 12/0 4x Heavy Bandit hooks. I tried to keep the weight down on it, so if i do have a smaller swim bait, the trace wouldn't over power it and kill it, thus my reason for not constructing the entire trace of 3 twisted strands and keeping it at 5.5meters in total. Above this i attach a 3meter 1.5mm wind-on leader.
Here goes.
The first 3.5meters at the hook end are 3 twisted strands thick, then the last 2meters to the swivel are 2 twisted strands thick.

The three strands coming into two. I make the trace out of two lenghts of wire, one is 5.5meters and the other is 9meters. I twist the two together then fold the  remainder 3,5meters back over the two twisted strands, so that its a solid trace without any joins.

Hey Bud, the hooks are very, very strong, but they get easily blunt, so need sharpening now and again. For the price, they are a steal. Unfortunately i only ever hooked two fish on swim baits, both times i got a serious hiding!! :unhap

AWESOME, keep at it....its a very frustrating game, you will loose 8 out of 10 fish, thats a fact, bite offs, fish swim into the line, double back and the list goes on,

Persistance pays off, I started swimming fish at the age of 16 and probably lost my first 20 odd fish!!!,

It gets easier as you go along,

Thanks for the encouraging words buddy :-) I'll keep at it. Would you mind sharing some of your catches? If I'm not intruding  :udman:

Hey Chris, Its so that i can claim a record if need be.
Union Rules. No line greater than .60mm, maximum two "J" hooks and a leader+trace of not more than 9meters.

hey Wes those are some awsome catches.

nemesis.....i was looking at that exact same trace u posted (remember the one i hijacked from u?). its looking so sweet in my tackle bag.

on the last 2 skei trips, before i could even start fishing, i rigged up my 50 with a xtreme heavy and tied that same trace on.....waiting for the first swim bait. u know the story....caught forkall to swim.

M*****you gave me that headlight haha. Some serious hooks there!! Need a swim bait of atleast 30kgs plus for those.
I totally have faith in those Bandit hooks, but only the 4xh. Fought a fish for over 2hrs 45mins without them opening up.
Next time i see you, bring your stuff i'll make you a swim trace, was also worried about the swivel, next trip to BasilManning i'll stock up.

Maybe this Summer we must organize a UA social at Amatikulu if conditions are right :happ:
