Epoxy
« on: August 22, 2011, 02:35:49 PM »
Hey guys I'm busy with a little non fishing DIY project and I need to seal up something. I need the consistency of the wet glue to be reasonable thick so that it won't just run throught the cracks. Secondly I need it to dry hard unlike PVC weld which is to flexible. I was wondering whether that epoxy you can buy in twin syringes would fit the bill? I have never worked with it so I don't want to buy it if it won't work

There are numerous types of epoxy available. Industrial "Structural" epoxies set rock hard but cannot be bought in small quantities. Epoxy putty (Pratley) also sets hard. But as Homie said - what is the application? Just to fill cracks?

I' not sure expoxy will stick adequately to PVC. Q-Bond will but is expensive & it's unknown how much you will need. :dunno:

Um its hard to explain because its not something many people will have seen before. Called a CO2 reactor basically water is pumped into the 110mm PVC pipe through the valve. The valve never takes the pressure from the pump it is only there so that you can disconnect the pump tubing without all the water in the PVC pipe draining out.

What material is the valve made of? If plastic... then get some high pressure pvc weld.
If it is going to be a metal valve connected to pvc pipe, then use the epidermix glue. Just make sure that you use a 80 or 60 grid sandpaper to roughen the pvc pipe first.
You can also use a product called steenvas. Very good product.

It is a normal gardena plastic valve. I have used normal Waco PVC weld and it didn't work it was too thin and too flexible. Is the HP one different

Basically you have a flexible tube leading from a pump on one end of the ball valve the other end of the ball valve fits straight into a piece of 110mm PVC pipe

Brad you can use that apoxy you talking about. I use it for almost everything in my house and on my tackle and it holds very well. Let me know what amounts you looking for. I get the stuff for Gremlins at half the cost that you would be paying in the shops. Problem is that I have to purchase a whole box of 12 units at a time but maybe their are some guys on the forum that will want some then I can allways make a plan and send up to you guys.

A pvc pipe will not "weld" onto a non pvc product. Rather get the correct fittings from a hardware store that fits into the ball valve. Clamp the flexible hose onto the fitting that you pvc weld onto the ball valve. om the other end get the fitting to go into the ball valve and into the 110mm pvc pipe. Do it right then you wont battle with leaks.
