HP you can normally tell just by looking at the hook whether it is going to be reasonable. Occasionally you may buy a lemon. The best indication is also often price. If the jig heads are cheap, then they are using cheap hooks. The strength of the hook is dependant on what you plan on using it for. If you are fishing for big strong fish, then you need very strong hooks. If you are fishing for small species, then it isn't as crucial. I like the Berkely Nitro range, they are expensive, but very reliable. I also use a lot of Bimini Jig Heads, which are manufactured in SA by a guy down in Cape St Francis. His prices are reasonable and his product is good.
WK the only thing about using split shot is that you get a different action out of the soft bait that you are using. By fitting it onto a jig head it swims straight and has a more predictable action. remaining upright. With split shot it can twist, turn upside down etc. This can be good in some scenario's, but not all.
