On the side of the reel is a small knob that can be tightened or loosed this allows the spool to run more freely (harder to stop) if loosened or is more restricted (easier to control) if tightened

Hey Krissi,

on the multipliers you kave a cast control knob jut next to the star drag.

This controls the movement of the spool.
when this is tightened, the spool spins slower, so when casting big baits, it does not spin too fast and result in an overwind

Just tighten the Cast Control knob. The inertia of launching a cast with a big bait causes the reel to spin very quickly initially, then, due to the wind resistance of the bait, it slows down quicker than normal.

Yea had that happen at my first trials - tried to throw a big mackie bait to impress n sliced my thumb open and had the biggest crows nest  :-(   Felt a total idiot!  Thank goodness the selectors saw past it. Throwing big baits as a woman is hard - really need to work on the casting technique and get it waxed first then slowly increase the bait size.  I tend to drop my rod too low on the follow through and flick the sinker when trying too hard for distance.  Practise, practise  w;k

Ok here's the Vid I got... notice how smooth the cast is... no forcing, otherwise you'll snap your rod. This cast is with an 8oz Bait and a 10oz sinker = 18oz in total.

Be sure to throw a slightly longer than normal drop with a big bait. We regularly throw yellow tail heads and whole frigates here in Cape Town. How far, I don't know....far enough I suppose! It needs to be a progressive loading of the rod. Short sharp hitting of the bait will end up with you in tears!

Currently I use a Purglas 400/7 for my big throw baits. Pentagon heavy will also work very nicely. I just put up a pic on another thread of the size baits we were throwing on Saturday. Those frigates were about 30-35cm long.

I am by no means an expert at throwing big baits but with Sliding now out of SASAA it is going to be important to present and throw a decent size and attractive bait!

...try not clipping the sinker. I find it flies better unclipped! Just get the sinker hanging inline with the bait. Also the bigger the bait the bigger the sinker.

Casting biiiig baits is an art form that was about to die out - mostly because of sliding.

But:
1 It does not help you to cast big baits with a light stick...
 Use a 7 + 1 / 8 + 1 - but my choise will be a Purglass stroke 6 / stroke 7 / stroke 8
2 A reel spool weight actuall makes a difference - the heavier a reel's spool the better it cast with a bigger bait. Thus I cas bigger baits with my Trinnie 30.
3 You have to change your swing - make it slower - thus you must use more power. No use trying the same action with a big bait as with a sinker alone.
4 The conveyor belt idea in the top post is an excellent Idea - I used to use an old cricket ball.
5 Then you must practise this. Even if you get tired - still practise but keep the swing correct. This will build mussle as well as mussle memory.
6 Buy cheap line so you are not afraid to throw a crow / break the line off.

cheers

whose this sylvester chap?...what did he do to my bra craig van der balls?.....

i hear it quiet often that big baits should be thrown unclipped. whats the reasoning behind it?. i need to start throwing bigger baits now. biggest i threw was whole makkies with 3 red eyes wrapped around it.

does an unclipped bait really go better?.....im sure clipping a bait and having both flying together should be better?

Still got the Balls Mrs Habib! HAHAHAHA!!!

with very big baits the sinker can pull on the edge of the bait and it can make the bait "helicopter", With the sinker hanging level with the bait they can travel together! It is a personal preference thing and neither way is right or wrong.

As always...... the best method is the one that makes you the most comfortable!

hahahaha thanks craig. as for my avatar and description below it.....all i will say is im waiting to see homie so i can whip that little dog for doing that to me. i assure u all .....that pic is not me.
ok so this bait story....ok i understand. just thought that the unclipped bait MAYBE threw the bait further.
looking at reefmans video....that was a huge bait and he took a chance with such a short drop....i was expecting that rod to break...but with that said...it looked like it landed close to 100m with that splash. tony did u measure that cast?.

Ja, I don't know about further but when you pull a decent shot with an unclipped bait flies better, less spinning, that a clipped bait. I normally use a 0.45 sinker line with a throw bait and am always concerend it will pop but it never does as the action on a big throw bait is quite a bit slower that with just a sinker. It is VERY important that the sinker and the bait hang level though!
