Herman I doubt they will I used to fly to durban quite a lot a few years ago and always took almost exactly the same setup as yours with me and never had problems. The only thing I would do is sellotape a piece of paper on to it then you can stick some fragile stickers on it without ruining your paint job. I would actually consider taking a plain tube on the plane somehow those luggae handlers manage to hurl everything around. Just a little tip pack your reels in your hand luggage my sl50 has never been the same since it went on a plane

Thanks for the advice.  :win: I will wait until after the trip before painting the tube.

Guys if you're worried about scratching them, then I've got bad news for you... the tubes scratch easily... mine already has a few nicks, scuffs and scratches... On an aeroplane, I guarantee that the tube will get scratched... to prevent it scratching, you'll need to cover them in bubble wrap before sending... not sure it's worth all that!!

Isn't that the point? The tube gets scratched and not the rods?

Its not a few scuffs and nicks I'm worried about I'm just worried that the paint doesn't bond properly and peels off in sheets!

If I go through all the effort of painting it etc. I would want it to last at least a couple of trips. I think for now I am just going to put the UA logo on it.

I thought the the objective of a tube is to protect your rod in transit - so if the tube gets scratched etc...its doing its job....right? I made two tubes about 20 years ago - never painted them...and they are both covered in airline tickets, scuffed, scratched etc....looks better than a paint job to me! Shows that my rods move around and dont hang out in my study on a pretty tube

here is my well used rod tube....shows that if you travel, any paint job is going to get messed up badly

See also the top end, I use a bolt and a wing nut and (not shown here) a hole drilled through the bolt that takes a small lock

That is a good idea, I like the lock!

I recently took 2 7ft boat rods in a very cheap tube overseas. Got some funny looks but the airlines never questioned the length. I went on 5 different airlines from very Beeg to tinyish...

The paintworks look awesome but last mere minutes thanks to the attention of the exceptionally diligent baggage handlers... Airline stickers are the heat!!

E.T.  :shre:
That is a brilliant product and I like the idea that you can lock it with no hassles. The strap loops will also come in handy. Do we get 3" pipe here in SA?

I believe we do.
A good place to start would be a place like Saplastikor  or even Maizey Plastics or one of those places that sells water pumps, pipes, etc.
I have a set of these caps at home, ordered it some time ago and just never used it, cause I want to build aluminium tubes with aluminium screw in end caps like the ones you get with premium fly rods.

Do you have an idea how much the postage will be for a set?

How about making them from PVC with a nice Carbon finish  and coated with 2K?  The ends can be custom PU castings? Feasible?
