Hi Reefs, do u perhaps have more information on this knot? I use it quite a lot and I'm just wondering what line it is most suitable for (Diameter) and whats the breaking strength like compared to the figure of 8 knot?

Not as strong as the Fig 8... especially in bigger diameter lines...

I use only this knot for thinner line. From 0.5 upwards I use figure 8 or Palomar. I also joint thinner lines with a blood knot which is similar to two clinch knots. BTW I doubt the accuracy of the 63% breaking strain on thinner lines(on terminal tackle). On the heavier line 81% sounds about right.I will test this weekend and report the results.

Sailor... these test results were done by Sportfishingmag... one of the biggest fishing Magazines in the world, using state of the art line testing equipment...! The old fisherman's knot (the Clinch knot) that everyone used to use in the old days, was changed because of their tests to the Improved clinch knot. But even after they improved it, it doesn't stand up to the others. Reason is because generally speaking, nylon doesn't like to be tied with perpendicular pieces crossing each other - it weakens the knot. 2c.

Totally agreed there Reefs!

@ Sailor the uni knot or figure of 8 is very good in thinner line... My 2c

Guys I'm daft. I misread the table and now see 63% is for the clinch knot and not the improved knot. No need for me to do test as I know the clinch knot is bad, not so much for breaking but for slipping when not pulled very tight before cutting the tag end. When I started fishing we only used the clinch not and we used it for everything.

How good is this with braid?

Post does not recommend it ....  but Google says otherwise.

Do not use it for braid - even doubled. It will slip.
In mono, I have used it as my go-to knot for 40 years and have never yet wound in the dreaded pigs tail.

For braid to terminal tackle - I stick to the palomar. Can do it within 10 seconds on a rocking boat in the dark.

A well tied "poor knot" is still heaps better than a poorly tied "strong knot".

Will not work in braid, use a double uni knot or palomar.

having looked at the pictures above..... i use a 3 turn centauri(figure8) for all my connections except cats paw for braid to mainline, and 7 turn centauri(figure8) back to back with 3 turn figure 8 for braid to leader.  It's neat tag end next to line. 3 turns in stead of 2 makes the knot neater.

Double Uni works just great for me so far for leader to braid.

I have been using a different version of clinch knot for all my white steenbras fishing for years and years joining monofilament to hooks and swivels. Never ever had a knot failure even in big steenies of 17 kg. It is the original clinch knot but with a small stopper knot near the tag end of line. When you tighten the knot the stopper knot must sit snug against the clinch knot on outside of knot. This prevent two important things, firstly the knot cannot slip and secondly the stopper knot prevents excess tension on the clinch knot when fighting a big fish so that knot does not fail. See crude drawing below (sorry I am no artist!).

It always worked for me so far. I also use it now on my fluorocarbon leader connection to the swivel/splitring/lure setup when I do spinning with braid.

it looks ok, but the stop knot I guess could be a bit faffy :dunno: . An extended version of the knot is to bring the tag end back through the loop, with good lubrication when you tie it works well, the Fig 8 is also a great knot
when I die, may my wife not sell my fishing tackle for what I told her I paid for it... and I have bought more, a severe case of TA
