Sterkfontein Dam
« on: May 23, 2011, 02:46:36 PM »
Hey guys I'm off to Sterkfontein dam at the end of June what is worth while targeting there around this time. Would prefer some fly fishing but I will head for spinning tackle if that is much better. Bear in mind we don't have a boat

If you are in that area do not miss swartwater dam for trout. it's at qwa qwa about half an hours drive from Sterkies.
For sterkies it's quite late for yellows but you never know.

We are only there for one night and its with the girlfriends family so I won't be traveling. What flies would you recommend for the yellows

get some beetles in Harrismith...but any hopper or beetle imitation should do the job if the wind is blowing a bit. not an expert on stillwater yellows, but stalking along the water edge without being seen is the way to go.

From all reports of attempts to fish Sterkies in Winter ( Tim Babitch, Terry Babitch & others ) leave all the fishing gear at home, especially if land based.

Rather take extra blankets and score some bonus points with SWAMBO and her family :hehe: w;k

Alternatively contact Dennis DeKlerk on 084 581 4847. He is the  :appr:  guide for Sterkies, and will put you in the picture.

If we caught fish on every trip, it would be called " Catching". We don't, and that's why it's called "Fishing".

Ok so fishing in winter seems like its not worth it. I think I'll just take my R&S stuff with and do some casting practice
