UNI vs FIG 8 KNOT
« on: May 21, 2011, 06:03:02 PM »
Hi Guys, Just read Reefs comparison of Uni vs Fig 8 showing diff in tag ends and Fig 8 being 10 - 15% stronger than Uni
Why then do you use a 7 turn Uni joined to Fig 8 to join braid to mono?
Why not use a Fig 8 to fig 8?
Regards
Paddy

IMO
Fig 8 for mono
Uni for Braid as a Uni is more like a wrap than a knot so better for braid.

The Fig 8 knot uses 3 loops max. This would be insufficient friction for braid - it will slip. Hence we use a Uni knot instead, which can be looped as many times as you need... in this case 7 turns in the braid side.

 :nail:
braid will not hold on only three turns.

IMO, there is zero difference between a Uni and a Fig 8 knot. Mine both pull up exactly the same and neither will beak under normal fishing conditions. If I need to make more loops then I tie it like a Uni and if less then like a Fig 8, that is the only deciding factor. Also use the Uni tying method if line is limited as one wastes less when doing it this way.

Kind of agree with Sylvester on this one.  The end product just looks and works to similar for me to feel that there can be any difference.  Also true about wasted line.  Say for instance you make your bemini and have a little screw up with the fig 8.  Too much wasted and have to start all over again.

Probably can make a 5+ loop figure 8, but only if you are a surgeon or watch-maker.

6 of one and half a dozen of the other.......I use both and they both work is more what I was getting at. I use a Fig. 8 method of tying with Heavy mono (up to 1.4mm for reef tackle)as it is easier so couldn't tell you if I see a difference or not. What I can say is that the two perform exactly the same for me. Then again I also use a Bimini in my braid and not a stitch, tried the stitch and just cannot get myself to feel comfortable with it. The bimini has not let me down yet even though most say it is the wrong knot for the substrate. So ja...different strokes for different folks. I feel it is somewhat a waste of time to try and get too technical on knots. A well tied granny knot will often out perform some of the fancy knots and twists most guys throw together.

Does the type of fish targeted not also dictate the type ( strength) of knot used?

If one is targeting  :brnz:, then maximum strength in the knot is required, were as if like me you target  :blktl:  :gljn: , then a simpler knot could be used?
