Half-Pint's swim bait trace
« on: May 20, 2011, 03:25:11 PM »
Credit for this idea must go to Misguide. I don’t want to claim it is exactly the same as his because I can’t remember if it is. :dunno: This is one half of the trace the other is the leader for which I am leaning towards a 2mm wind on. The upside to this trace as I explained on another thread is that my swimbait rod is seldom rigged to swim a fish because it doubles as a heavy slide rig. Most of the spots I fish have well oxygenated large rock pools where you can dump swim bait while you rig up a rod. However simply dumping bait into a pool does have disadvantages which you will notice when chasing a grey around in waist deep water! :shk With this setup you can now pin the bait and dump it into the pool with a “leash” making it easy to pull out. Then simply tie on your leader and away you go.What you will need:3m of 440lb cable (Available at builder’s warehouse for R1 a meter)2x 14/O J hooks2 plastic thimbles2 double barrel brass crimps don’t ask me what size because the wire is labelled 1.5mm yet it doesn’t fit into 1.6mm crimps??? Go figure! Good quality ball bearing swivelSome heat shrinkGood quality wire cutters (This is after all 440lb wire)Pliers

Place some heat shrink over the eye of one hook and work it onto the shaft between the shank and the eye. Heat it up until it shrinks onto the hook. This will be your second hook and allow the snell to bite into something.

Now thread one end of the wire through the crimp.Push the end of the wire through the eye of the hook and back through the crimp forming a loop.

Place a plastic thimble through the eye of the hook and pull the loop tight with the wire running through the thimble and crimp it tightly. I use so few crimps that I can’t justify the expense of crimping pliers so I just use a blunt set of side cutters and squash it further in a vice.

Trim of the tag end at the crimp and slide over some heat shrink to finish it off nicely. Now slide the wire through the back of your second hook and seat it about 20 to 25cm away from the first.

Now snell this into place. You can check out Reefz guide to learn the knot although if you are looking at swim baits I’m sure you can do this already.

Slide over some heat shrink just to make it look sexy.

Now follow the steps as for the bottom hook to attach the swivel.

Roll up the trace and search for a big enough pouch in your tackle bag!

Brad, good trace there bud. Think Jason also posted a pic of his trace a while ago. Not to burst your bubble, but that swivel is gona pop at the first blackfin you hook. Remember, go big or go home. That's the way with swimbait traces.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles
