MAPELANE 12 MARCH AS PER PH
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:06:28 PM »
FISHING:

I will leave it to the other guys (and girl) - REEFMAN, MIKE PIKE, Jan & AH - to provide feed back on their catches.
Unfortunately we were not able to launch the fishing ski's at all due to wind, fairly rough seas, and maybe being a bit too "carefull". When we departed a noon today the sea was absolutely flat and had we stayed another night, we would definately have launched today. I will post some observations about
paddle ski fishing at Mapelane in the Paddle Ski Section.

Nobody fished on Saturday and we met on the beach at about 5am on Sunday morning.
I made one attempt at catching Shad but the boiling mid-break and sea weed made such a mess of my trace that we (AH & I) decided to wait for day break and start spinning for Wave Garrick etc.

Shortly after day break Tony caught this Sea Pike while spinning with a lure.

We learnt a lot from Tony and Mike about spinning during this time - mainly by observation, How to hold the rod, rate of retrieve, the properties if a spinning rod, etc.
Jan, the other member concentrated on surf fishing.

Not being able to launch we continued with spinning for the rest of Sunday and Monday morning.
We continued spinning for the rest of the time discussing swimming action of lures, etc. etc.
On Monday I caught a small Javelyn Grunter (I think) in the estuary but lost it when I removed the hook.

SOCIAL:

On Monday evening we had a braai.  Myself, Tony and Mike at the back with Andree (AH) in front
Jan took this pic

It was great getting to know the guys better and talking about lures for kayak fishing. etc.
A very "lively" and most enjoyable evening indeed.

This time Andree took the pic with Jan present on the right

Great stuff, it is always good to see the guys (and lady) having a good time. Pity about the weather but that is life and you have to do what you can to enjoy yourself. Better luck next time.

THE VENUE

From a fishing point of view it is certainly a jewel.
Estuary fishing.
R&S.
Kayak fishing.
Ski-boat fishing (not advisable due to roads, but St Lucia is close enough)
Spinning, etc.

The general consensus is that the camping facilities have gone backwards. Grass not cut, ablutions not all that clean, rubbish bins not emptied.
The office (shop) offers very little in food stuffs, only a few types of tinned food, and long life milk but no bread or anything that can spoil - vegetables, etc. Ice and bait are available.

It's been great time and whilst my contribution towards "fishing reports" is non-existent I learnt a helluva lot from guys that gladly share their wealth of knowledge.
Thanks Tony, Mike and Jan.
And AH with whom I had the  time to discuss important issues that we don't normally have time for at home - like fishing

@ PH,

You mention that it is not advisable to tow your boat there due to the bad roads, how bad is it?

Will a jetski be ok?

I am going there in April with the jetski and just needs a head up!

I Mentioned the road conditions in a thread "The road to Mapelane".
The roads are pretty bad but if you take it easy and SLOWLY it should not be a problem. Watch out for nasty
potholes especially the tarred sections with the shadows of the trees falling on the road.!!

When we were there there was a fairly large ski boat as well. So it can be done.
Maybe the other guys still there will have an update on the roads after more rain when they get back.
We towed a trailer with 2 kayaks on top and it went OK.
Looking forward to your report and  :tite

Hi Bennie,

Not photoshop - Bonnie Heads used for chumming instead of flashers!!! - LOL

Jokes aside, don't know if true or not, found the photo with the below article on google on Coatesman's Freediving and spearfishing Blog...

Mapelane Light House Reef
52kg Cuta shot off Mapelane Light House Reef
30/06/2007

I grew up on Mapelane Light House Reef, my grandfather was the guy who cut the first road to the place in the 50's. So naturally I have a special place in my heart for the place. Every year I tell my mates:
We should go to spearfish off the Light House Reef at Mapelane during late June early July thats when the big cuta are around.
But we never seem to get there. I have experience the 'BIG Cuta' run there and it is amazing, my largest on line is 36.5kg ...... I was 12 years old at the time!
Now I get this 'surreal' picture of a 52kg Cuta speared off Mapelane Light House Reef, and all I can think of is - could have..... should have .... but we didn't!
Coatesman

Cheers, MM

Did you notice he is holding the fish with 2 fingers? Would you hold a 52kg fish between your forefinger and thumb! It's been discussed... Photo shop for sure!
