Braided mono 30lb by Cortland
« on: February 24, 2011, 11:05:17 AM »
Hi Gents

With our UA vaal trip about a week to go, I'm busy buying some cortland 30lb braided mono.
This is used exclusively for czech nymhing. I got shown this by our resident fly guru, and it works very well.
Please be advised that this is not a setup for beginners.
The cost are R4.60 per meter. At most you will only need about 1 to 1.5m of the stuff.
Please add your name if interested and ill take it to the vaal were we can distribute the stuff.
Regards
Christo

It is Tony.It is ultra sensitive. You can see every little bump. It only comes in 30m rolls at R139.
And they also don't wana sell it by the meter, hence this post.

Gerhard,
Ill try and explain. Basically this braided mono acts as a strike indicator. So you have 1.5m of braided mono attached to your fly line and at the end you attach a 50cm piece of fluorocarben with your flies attached.
This is 10 times for sensitive fishing this way than with a strike indicator. Also taking the strike indicator away, equils less resistance when the fish feeds.
Maby Rory can explain why it looks like a zebra. LOL

What Hooch said just about sums it up. You know those loops you can buy that you attach to the end of the flyline? Those loops are made from braided mono, same stuff. The way we use it is a bastardised variation of czech nymphing. Traditionally in czech nymphing there is no strike indicator used, instead a short piece of normal coloured mono is used as a strike indicator.  The varitions on using some kind of line as a strike indicator are endless: plain mono, boiled mono, mono boiled and shaped into coils and of course braided mono. No technique can be considered "THE" way to fish, its all preference and what suits the individual. A strike indicator can help you control the speed of the flies in the current, whereas using the braided mono, you have to physically move or "lead" the flies at the correct speed. This is probably the most sensitive way of detecting takes. Because you're controlling the speed of the flies, it has a lot more to do with "feel" than just seeing the indicator respond to a fishes a take. It takes a hell of a lot of practice to differentiate between rocks, weed, sticks or fish.

Braided mono is uniform in colour when you buy it, we use a permanent marker to add some contrasting stripes, which in turn helps you detect the more subtle takes. Someone like Chris Williams (Chair of the St Stithians club) doesn't even use his flyline. He's got about 7 metres of braided mono connected to his flyline and thats what he uses. I suppose if you've been flyfishing as long as he has its second nature already!

Heres a pic (click to enlarge), check the zebra braided mono at the end of the rod:
