Durban bait spots.
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:00:58 AM »
For all the guys coming to fish the Couta comp in Durbs.
Everyone knows that a live shad or mackrel is one of the best baits for couta!!

These are the popular bait reefs around Durban.

CONTAINERS -  5kms. NE of the harbour mouth in about 22m of water - very popular spot for boats going north as it is en route, also very close to NO1 (2.5kms). All baits(shad, mackrel, mozzies, sea pike), but generally very good for mackrel if they are about.

S 29 49 470

E 31 04 535

DOZER - 3kms NEE of the containers in about 26m of water, said to be 1 or 2 bulldozers washed off ship?? - not too popular as its a bit out of the way, decent bait and also some couta when targeted as well as daga in winter - good spot to balloon a mackrel for YFT.

S 29 48 523

E 31 06 000

BARGE (Virginia Barge/ T Barge)- 9kms. NNE of the harbour mouth, 2kms off shore in front of Virginia Airfield in about 23m of water - purpose sunk concrete barge to create AR(1990's) - also popular - all baits and also good to power drift over/around with baits for gamefish(if not too many boats) frequented by some good queenfish March-May(can get double figures!!)

S 29 47 350

E 31 04 500

CAISSONS - 2kms NE of the Barge in about 25m of water -  the old WW2 anti submarine net caissons were removed for the harbour mouth widening and sunk here in 2005/6 - all baits - generally plenty plenty shad!!

S 29 46 490

E 31 05 400

FONTAO(Umhlanga Barge) - 3.5kms N of the Caissons and 1.5kms offshore just south of Umhlanga lighthouse, in about 24m of water - small trawler purpose sunk - all bait but often dived on by dive operators from Umhlanga.

S 29 44 710

E 31 05 783

SH1T PIPE - 4kms S of the harbour mouth in 40 - 46m of water - can be hit or miss and difficult to fish because of depth and currents(heavier sinkers) generally not as good as others for shad but can be excellent for mackrel.
