december the month of personal bests and firsts...
« on: January 03, 2011, 05:59:35 PM »

I went on holiday with my familly this december from the 8th till the 22 we were in plett then went to pe untill yesterday  and the fish were wild!!!!

when we arived in plett it was to late to go for a throw so i set up my rods for the next morning and FULLED!!! the family freezer with bait that i had brought up so much so that the bait that i was going to use the next morning did not fit so had to stay in my chiller over night...

I went fishing the next morning with Matt s from here who is my cousin and I got fish throw for throw from small smoothies to small greys bronzies every cast was a pull for me with him not getting a pull untill the after noon when he did get a pull we went sure what it was at first as it was smallish but boxed hard at the side as we were fishing off the rocks and it tried to cut him off on every ledge it could find right at the edge but i grabbed the leader and pulled up a small smoothie of 4-5kgs his first ever smoothie! and a nice smoothie for the day considering that the other smoothies were all +-2kgs haha...

then we went for a quick swim in the one rock pool lol where i was sitting on a rock and an okkie decided to stick to my legg haha after a while we got the ockie out and i slid it exept for 2 leggs which were kept for throw baits... Matt threw the on e leg and it was dead with the exeption of the odd small smoothie still tyrying to eat my baits but nothing on his... Every single bait i put out exept for the whole okkie and par5ts off smooth hound was eaten by +-2kg smoothies even whole frigates of about 500grams were fair game! then  matts reel screemed! by screamed i mean screamed properly!!!!! it was his 15/30 with 0.40 and 0.80 leader on an 11ft penn powerstick was perfect if not infact to heavy for what we had been catching now the smallest bait in the water an okkie leg was eaten and he was close to getting spooled haha when the fish turned and after a very good fight decided to take his line into the mussel coverd pinical but luckily it came loose and i managed to land it with out a gaff and it got washed right into the tiny gully and we grabbed, tagged and took photos before the release ofr his first ever duckbull it was only 23 or 24kgs but was hooked in the mouth and in the wing so put up a monster fight! i must get the pic off of my dads pc then will post it for him...

then we fished the next day and got small fish and met Riaan engelbrecht who had caught a good raggie of 202kgs earlier in the morning so i slid out a yellowtail head with belly on the slide but before i could even get the bait made my line with just a sinker on started to bounce then slack would in to find that i had been bitten off probably by a small hammer or bronzie so retied and got a huge yellowtail bait out and started to throwbait for small bronzies etc as matt casted while his bait was still sinking he went vas with a hammer then it was small hammers, bronzies, greys all round matt got a good hammer of 12odd kgs which put up a good fight on the lighjt 0.40 and 11ft penn powerstick...

these small bronzies etc carried on for a good few days then the water got cold! and the raggies arived!! i droped one and then riaan went VAS with a big fish which ended up being 200+kgs! then i came back the next morning and fished with Renier Nortje who was VAS!!!! with a huge bronzie 150+kgs! he had 200m of braid left.... ON HIS TRINI 50!!!! when slack... the 1.5mm mono broke the bronzie had jumped and the sinker had dameged the line badly and it eventually bronke threw no fault of reniers...

later my whole chokka rod had a pull and it was a small bronzie and as i was lifting it out the water on my trini 50 and shark extreme my lighter rod the posidon heavy hmg and torium 30 went on a slow steady run with a whole frigate as bait... handed my trini/shark extreme to my father and he put the small bronze back while i went VAS with the other rod!

after a while Renier and I decided that it must be a Pylie as it was slow, heavy, strong and no head shakes!!! oh Sh** i had a heavy rod out and that gets eaten by a small bronze but my lighter rod getts eaten by a pylie.... it was going left right then left again and could not decide which way to go eventually going left and sitting in a HUGE rip as the tide was going out and it was a river mouth!!! then it reefed my and i thought it was over then i got the line out off t6he bricks and what happend next was a huge suprise to me It jumped!!!! it was a foul hooked raggie wtf a jumping raggie!!!!! after a long fight with the current i landd the raggie it was huge!!!!!! a personal best for sure we measured, tagged, photo graphedand released this beast of a fish! 210cm pcl which is 180kgs acording to the charts!!!! foul hooked under the jaw which explains the strange and powerfull fight! we had forgoten the camera behind and luckily my one cousins girlfriend was there to take pics

the next day i went again and got a good run on a grunter head and this fish was faster but again no head shakes??? after getting it to the right spot to land it i started to use the power of the trini 50 and shark extreme medium and pulled the fish hard then i saw it for the first time and the fin was huge wtf was it? andrew wood went to land it and then we saw it was actually a raggie but was hooked in the pec fin  it was not big but pulled hard! due to being hooked in the pec..

it was 176cm pcl which is 90kgs for a male...

look at its tail!

the next day i had a crap day with 1 pull but it missed the hooks...

that night we decided to go again and i put out a yellowtail head and a makkie on my two rods and my father put the same grunter head with fillets added and a nice size frigate my rod was first to go and it was my 50 with shark extreme medium with the yellowtail head and when i set the hooks the shark woke up and took a good 150m of line with big head shakes i thought here is my big raggie!!! after say 35min i had it in the shore break and we realised the size of this creature  it was f*(*!# HUGE!!!!!!! after 2 more shorter runs my father grabed it and i gave my rod to my friend to help land the fish... we could hardly move it with water and it would not budge when the water got too shallow! we quickly measured re measured and measured yet again it was 229cm every time!!!!! a beast of 200+ easilly! after trying to get some photos the other rod stared to scream it was my fathers rod with the grunter head which missed the hooks... the photos af the HUGE raggie are crap but its still going to be a memory that will stay with me forever!

this tail also had a piece missing? but let me tell you it was stuffing strong!!!

Hey Steve, congratulations, I am stoked for you, you went for big fish and you weren't disappointed by the looks of it, great catches !! I hope you get many more PB's just like those in 2011

Great report mate !

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

:happ: well done!!!! ya i normally also only use 0.55mm but i had been fishing for pylies and they had been stuffing people up so i decided that i would rather use 0.60 and have a better chance but not be able to claim the record than get beaten 3 hours into the fight... again.... then the raggies came on the bite so just changed bait was a mistake in the end <:

there where afew around that size the one guy riaan engelbreacht got one of 229cm aswell!

what bait you get yours on?
