Hake and Gurnard day
« on: November 21, 2010, 05:10:38 PM »
After a bit of a late start we headed from Port St. Francis towards Cape Receif and stopped roughly in front of the Gamtoos at 85- 90m depth...

My dad caught the first nice fish of the day, a 4.5kg hake. A giant hake by local standards and by far the biggest I've seen. Its gonna be supper tonight :p measured 86cm

check the head on that thing, looks like a cobia! lol, im gonna try convert it into something 100kg+

Next it was my turn, a hard braking gurnard took a chokka and fillet combo. It's the second biggest one I've ever seen and my biggest by far. 3kg  fshg

On a roll it was my turn again next, with a pb hake of 79cm or around 3.4-3.5kg

I also got a nice big carpenter in the mid 50's but didnt take a pic.

My new jigging/bottom fishing outfit saw me back to my old fish catching form, and Im VERY happy with it. Got a sustain 8000 on a shimano speedmaster mh rod and 50lb sufix performance braid. It makes all the difference fishing with a good grinder and braid for bottoms. Anyway I'm very chuffed with the setup

Another youngster on the boat caught a blue shark about 40-50kg, had a good tussel and it rolled him off at the boat. Later on a smaller blue came up right next to the boat to eat a small carpenter that was struggling to get down. Was a great treat seeing a shark feeding so close to us and right on the surface with its whole head and back out of the water. Unfortunately didnt manage pics

Also saw a little hammerhead cruise past us, a common sight actually

So that was my day on the sea :)

What a beauty , thats the biggest Gunard Ive seen . Aqua do you guys drift when you target these fish aka Hake? and just drop your bait down , do you use a type of lock bucket with bait also down at that depth ? I would love to give it a bash here in the Cape any tips appreciated thanks

thanks fellas, seems we found a nice honey-hole there ;)

Kirk, no we anchor as the wind or current usually pushes us around too much and then its tangles for everyone

A bag of old guts soaked in anchovy oil makes a big difference hey! Just attach it to the anchor when it goes over. Although we hardly ever do that for dome strange reason...
