PR knot and great Uni-knot video.
« on: November 17, 2010, 06:16:50 PM »
I found this really great video to tie a PR knot neatly and without too much fuss. An added bonus is at the 2 minute 30 second point in this video is a really innovative way to turn a six or seven turn uni knot into a six or seven turn figure of eight knot. So simple it makes me wonder why I didn't think of it myself ( the best ideas often are).

To my mind the seven turn Uni knot is the best braid knot and combined with a three turn fig eight knot on a leader, back to back, is the quickest and most effective way of joining a leader to braid. Super strong, I use it all the time when on a boat and needing to quickly add anew leader and get back to fishing.

Ya... in my previous life (on SL) I posted this video there because I was amazed at the clever way they finished this knot off... really simple and clever. This finishing knot is called the RIZUTTO finish and can be used to finish off any wrap knot.

Tommo, do you ever tie the PR knot on a boat? It's easy to do at home, but I really struggled to do it on a small rocking boat?

I've checked Earl Strydom tie loads in no time on a boat, and Nepps too! Earl was using a bobbin that Bennie had made for me, he loved it so much I donated it to him at the end of the trip, a decision I regret now!

Hmmm, to be perfectly honest I don't tie the PR knot on a boat if I am out for a session and I lose my leader(I hate to admit this, as it indicates laziness on my part, but it's the truth). Usually I am in a mad rush to get the line back in the water and simply use a back to back fig 8 knot. Seven turns on the braid side and three on the mono leader, using the technique shown in the video. It is a lot quicker.

It is seldom that I have found it necessary to replace my leader on the boat, as I am using 100lb braid these days, and have my drag set hard enough to stop a formula 1 car, when targeting the big boys, but it does happen from time to time. The odd fish bigger than a formula 1 car gets in the mix, or the jig snags the bottom @#$#@.

With the right bobbin the PR is actually a pretty easy knot to tie, and strong as anything, so maybe I should get into the habit of tying it on the boat. I think the main issue is that I am usually fishing with other guys, and end up doing all the knots on the boat, so don't want to lose too much fishing time...

Without wanting to be controversial Craig I honestly dont like this version of a PR knot at all for the following reasons.

1. There is too much fiddling - on the boat which is rocking and the wind  blowing a nightmare - the wraps around the hands need to be done at the start of the knot - few loops down then tight ones then reverse ( often the part where new comers hassle - just force back with thumb and forefinger - then spin) Few half hitches, burn tag end if able to, more half hitches to bulb, half hitches on line then uni to finish.

2. He spins one way which is fine, but then just sort for leaves the line sitting whilst doing his uni - it  will easily unravel itself/lose its grip so a few half hitches good as soon as the spinning finished.

3. Horrifyingly he then puts a flame close to braid  with no protection for the braid- getting a flame on a rocking boat with a breeze is hard as it is - imagine this set up - hes gonna burn/damage his line IF he manages to get  a  flame.

4. The burning of the tag end like he does can lead to same problems - usually use finger nails to protect the braid - another thing with the burnt leader end is to be careful of sharp edges on floro - the version that Chris W taught us has  a few half hitches on the braid and the final uni is braid on braid which add some protection. Good to try to get mushroom shape on the bulb to avoid sharp sides cutting the braid.

5.When doing this on a boat the easiest way is to have the rod in  a rod holder and pulling against that when doing the half hitches and final uni - also this guys knot seems to hinge on that burnt bulb preventing it form slipping . One needs to be able to do a PR that holds regardless of a burnt end on the leader or not - jsut have to keep an eye on it whilst fishing to check its not unravelling. If no wind and can get a flame - sure do it.

6. The uni that he closes up with can just be pulled up, the wrapping of the loop he does just helps to lay the knot nicely when you pull it up. Pulling up without the wrapping leads to uneven lay sometimes.

If Fedu sees this he may be able to post the version by Josh - once you have these taped they are very quick - just practice.

Actually that was the knot I used to use before seeing ChrisW video.

Bruce as some points that allways annoyed me with that knot mainly the fact that you flame close to braid and that you can not finished it with half stiches to try make a "ladder" around the tag end of the mono leader helping you go through the guides.

In the end when I used to do it the mono end would allways stand a bit out of the knot and would "scratch" the rod guides and braid would find a way to get around there after taking the fish in and I would allways have to untangled it before the next drop.

By the way this type of torch lighters are nice to have around for all your knot operations either at home or in th boat with the wind.

Easy to do on the boat, I used to do this easier version of the Improved allbright knot when in a hurry.

Still the same problem on retrieving of "scratch" guides and braid around it when taking the fish in the boat but pretty fast when the bite is hot and no monster "one in a lifetime" fish around.

Breaking strenght not as good (as PR) but also think this version is a bit stronger than the regular improved albright...

Phew - I got seasick watching the Josh version - which means I would never be able to tie one on a boat!

Fedu - how do you finish off the tag end? Or do you just trim it off?

On the PR cut then lighter and try to make it round to avoid cuts on the braid line.

By the way a couple of old breaking strenght test to understand why the PR.

65lb powerpro braid to 80 lb momoi mono

Albright breaks at 50lb at knot

Uni - Uni breaks at 55lb at knot

PR breaks breaks at 70lb at the braid side

Also worth reading and scientifically tested is pametfisher writings (I personally consider pametfisher THE authorithy on this issues)

got myself a PR bobin from jigstar africa and tried yesterday for the first time to tie this knot
after watching both videos (and Andre 1year ago during the JNB boat show) I decided that I wanted to do the Josh version of the knot

1) I found the bobin procedure easy...but if you don't hold tie on the rod side, mono will get slightly twisted
2) I found easy the 1/2 hitch on each direction...just follow the video and keep the rod side with tension and there will be no stress at all
3) I found hard to follow the finishing with the 6 loops and the loops over the 6turns...this were I lost a lot of time and had to view and review the video till I get it right (I guess)

it took me 20min from start to finish
this is the result of my only try of the knot...it seems similar but a bit more bulky that the one on the videos...definetely need to work a bit on the finishing
I've joined 80lb braid to 100lb mono

what do you guys think it will happen (in terms of breaking strenght) if I mix the 2 versions of the knots this way:
1) bobin procedure (similar on both videos)
2) 1/2 hitch to secure braid to mono (Josh version)
3) "uni knot/figure of 8" finishing (Tommo's video version)

scary stuff is how close they get to the braid/mono with the lighter

Just a question..... Did you guys ever use the Bob Sands Knot and what do you think about it. My experience that I have with this

knot is when I have a failure, each failure was where the mainline parted and never the braid or connection.

Hi guys, Can someone explain why many of the guys tie so many half hitches? To make a ramp over the end of the mono is perhaps a reason, but beyond all I can think of is to stop slipping.

If it is to stop slipping here are some tricks you may try. Do ten turns underneath the braid ( only over the mono) right at the beginning of the knot. Then bring the main braidline over those turns and thereafter do the turns over both lines. Basically you start off with a ten turn half hitch. Another trick is to do about 70% of the turns, then stop and do one turn over only the braid. After that continue with the remaining 30% of the turns around both braid and mono.

If you want a shorter version of the knot, do an fg knot with about 10 turns in each direction. Thereafter do twenty turns with the tag in a similar way to the pr knot.  I think the main reason for an fg being slightly weaker than a pr is because it has to go from being parallel to the mono to running at 90 degrees to the mono very quickly. The 20 turns help it to straighten gradually.

A final trick is to tie the knot without a bobbin. Attach a sinker to the end of the braid and simply use that for swinging. It works really well once you are used to it. Also helps if you forget/lose Or damage the bobbin, and from start to finish is at least as quick. It also makes it easy to use heavier sinkers for heavier braid.

To be honest, since discovering how effective the FG is when it's well tied, I simply have not bothered tying another PR... even for jigging.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.
