:hnthnt: Poured these  bad boys last night and will rig them up later this evening , nothing beats tin for kob....

Hi Kent, Sorry to Hijack, please show me how you rig them and the hooks/rings that you use.
I have a spoon mold and tin as well, so I need some advice if you dont mind.
...Hi Preno , I use 7mm Triton split rings on bothe ends of the spoon , I have alot of these splits and not sure if Triton is still around ...then i use single 5/0 short shank live bait hooks with the barb pressed down...I will take some pics for you and post them up here...

Mornings Folks , after a good weeks spinning and hunting the kobbies this weekend turned out a bit iffy....I always look for what ifs and why the kobbies were not on line ...well , this weekend I put it down to very warm inshore water conditions , kob are pretty sluggish in warm water and at an average of 23 the whole weekend the kobbies were in slow mode...As to the barometer , it too was a tad too dead and steady , the bright moon tides were spot on and the shad were on line the whole weekend 24/7...Sooo...we now look to the weekend ahead and wait n watch as the winter systems come into play....stay tuned...

Hi all -

Just stumbled onto this post now - takes me back to my early days learing to spin for kob from the likes of Bricky Branfield and Rennie Schwedhelm in Gonubie in the early 1990's.  In those days the Daiwa SLOSH 20 was the reel to use and we were using spoons very like what you have shown already.  With the exception of a broad, flat spoon symmetrical around the long axis.  I used to sharpen the edges of the spoons to get them to flick around at the slightest speeds.   We also used Rapalas weighted on the hooks with soldering wire (very expensive) and started using soft plastics, which worked better than they should...

Moved to Australia in the late 1990's and have been spinning for kob off-and-on on this side of the pond.   They do take but at Kent has said, the requisite conditions are critical and in the 25 years plus I've found them only a small handful of times.   In this part of the world there are fewer kob, fewer breeding grounds, the inshore conditions are seldom right.

Hi Bud , thanks for that feed back , interesting about the kob in Australia , i find when my five top conditions are aligned i get the kobbies...but yes , on spoon , conditions and barometer timing is crucial ...

i have fished along side Renny a few times out Haga way and he certainly was an excellent proponent of the "rappie" for kob and used to joke and tell him he is cheating...

He also used spoon , but followed the low n slow method over sandy bottoms , which Ive found to be way less succesfull than using light , great action spoons over bricky areas...

AND...yes plastics do work too well , kob get silly with them , ...sadly...

So what I have found to work here - which I did not try properly in SA/Tkei - is a spoon in a surf/rock hole with a foam cover to it.  I spent a lot of time fishing working water, which you don't get here much.  noting this becasue I'm not going to get a chance to try it and it should be tried.

Shelter is at a premium here, so when on the hunt for kob I'm looking for shelter from the sun/seals/and with plenty of oxygen but not much current.  This happens on the north side of rocks and reefs where the prevailing wind direction is SW and creates the foam on the reef which then spills over and screens any hole that is on the north side.    There is a bit behind Gonubie front reef (you'll know this place) which is a long cast, but ....  I'd try there to start.  Given thatit is holes that we fishing I'm likely to have a soft plastic on

..If you know Gonubie ....I throw spoon almost exclusively along the wild side , from 6th street through to wooden shoe area , done so for the last 20 odd years and have had lots of success with kob and hooked and landed 8 poensies ....

Good day Folks , had an early AM session yesterday on the public holiday ...tides were spot on , water colour was good and I think the temp was too warm for kobbies...AND a bit frustrating as i lost one of my Fugly spoons , ...at my low tide spot i could not get the Fugly to work properly and got brave and let it sink a bit more than usual...it is said , fortune favours the brave....well , not today Josephine...

I never like losing tin and it always feels as if if Ive lost a soldier...

we reset , re tie and move onto the next session....

The Jiggy is locked n loaded and the 11f Sylaflex c.1978 , is all set to go , I may just give this retro outfit a run this weekend as its going to be an iffy fishing weekend...

Stay tuned...

Well , its Monday Folks and this past weekend was not really top top conditions , but it was expected and predicted...be that as it may , Sunday arvie late and the wind had all but disappeared , so I decided it was a perfect time to take the Retro outfit for a throw...

NOW , its been years since I have thrown a Jigmaster , let alone a HS one , which is much faster than the ole red Jiggies..;.AND , its in the saddle of a 11f Sylaflex , which by its sheer nature a pretty "lazy" rod and one needs a VERY well educated thumb on the HS Jiggy...

First throw , Im balls to the wall and let fly ...well , lets just say , 4 throws and 4 overwinds... :crzy :hyst: ..

Much to the amusement of a laaitie fishing to my right with a SL50 and a decent looking graphite stick...

Anyhow , after after about 20 odd throws I get the lag of the Sylaflex under my belt and then really settle into a rythm

Was absolutely brilliant getting back to where it all started for me as a 14 year old laaitie and now I cant wait to get my first kobbie on the retro outfit...

Stay tuned...

Good day Folks , I trust your Monday is off to a good start....

Well , as I watched the systems track true as i expected and the tides were really suited to my liking ...Friday night I kept one wary eye on the barometer
as saw that it had not quite reached that magical number of 1021hpk , but was hovering around the 1006hpk mark...

Now , I am NOT a fan of a dead steady barometer , rather have a falling glass than one that has come to a dead stop in a 12 hour period, and this glass of Friday , had been dead steady going on for 7 odd hours....

I woke up Sat AM to a dead , dead glass and thought , well its a good tide , so lets go see what the water is doing ....

AND then , just before I ventured out , I gave the glass one more light tap and it rose by 4 points ,,, SOLID ,,,..at least its moving and in the right direction....

I could feel that there was a very very slight NNW puffing and was not too concerned about that....as i got to the waters edge I could see in the early AM darkness that the sea was not on its head and seemed to be an even swell running...

I get the temp of the water and it comes back at a cool 18 degrees , which I am also excited about....the water is gin gin clear and Im also now aware of late about the possibility of poensies hanging around....

Well , Im 7 casts into the pre dawn and i get and absolutely SOLID enquiry , on for at least 7 seconds or so , kob off , I have a coffee break and sit and watch the water for 10 minutes...I then move onto my loa tide spot as I ran out of water quickly , ...four throws into the second session of the morning and once again ...KOB ON!!!...this time it was an on and an off....I leave the kobbies at 07h45 and mosy on home....feeling pretty bouyant about the prospects for a late arvie session...

Saturday arvie I get down to my spot and i se the water is perfect at my high tide spot ....on my first loosener cast . I am KOB ON!!!...I can feel its a decent fish and now Im gentle and firm at the same time as im a good 30 odd meters out with the tide emptying at a rate of knots and with spoon and kob , you NEVER know where that 5/0 short shank live bait hook is ...top or bottom lip and you are dancing on eggshells , either corner , in the sinew , you are IN THE GAME!!!....

This kobbie is a head bangre and I get him in close and at the 5 or so meter mark , I see him in the shallows lift his silver head and shake ....the DS and its 5/0 came whipping past at ankle height and I had a wry smile on my face , not because of the dropped kobbie , but because I dont have a 5/0 hoodlum embedded in my ankle... duh

Soooo , im now AMPED for Sunday morning as Im close , so close....when I get home I see the baro has risen some more and is now sitting at 1017hpk and rising ...Sunday morning arrives and Im at me spot 06h00 , water is TOPS , I have 4 to 5 throws at my high tide spot and decide to go to my low tide as the water was draining fast...

Second throw at my low tide spot and a SOLID enquiry , next throw another enquiry , ...breather , next throw , KOB ON!!..land a 60cm kobbie and he was spicey , ...for the next half hour I land 8 kobbies , and I smile as I watch them in the high tide pool milling about ,,, ALL juveniles and healthy as can be!!...

What a BEAUT morning and all kobbies were safely released to fight another day ...

Conditions , conditions , AND a rising barometer , for me will almost always tell me its kob time...water temp is very crucial as well....

Well Folks , that certainly was a most productive weekends fishing for kob on spoon...

Keep the Faith and stay SOLID out there...

Mornings Folks , I am a day late with my weekends report , but Monday was Monday... duh

Anyhow , Saturday dawned with absolutely spot on conditions for kob and i get down to my spot at 05h45 and with a low tide at 07h15 , i see the water has drained quite a bit already even for a neap tide....

Two throws at my high tide spot and quickly realise that there is not enough water....

I have a quick coffee break and move over to my low tide spot and can see the pinnacle just sticking out....I wade out and the water is a lovely even temp of around 19 BUT the little west puffing has iscles on the wind... :clwn

I see the water out front is working beautifully and three throws into my session I get a SOLID enquiry , 4th throw another enquiry ...

I reset and put in another cast , same area and 5 turns into thE retrieve ...KOB ON!!..

quite a feisty fella and after this one I go on to land another two . all three around the 60cm mark , juvenile series...

I left at 07h30 and the kobbies were still on line  , was a SOLID mornings throwing spoon for kob...

Sunday AM dawned , pretty much the same conditions and early in the dark still , landed a juvenile 40cm kobbie...

Conditions , conditions , conditions.....when they are aligned , the kobbies are on line...

Have a SOLID week Folks and keep the Faith...
