Kencor 830H - self service
« on: August 26, 2021, 08:30:43 AM »
I bought a Kencor 830H (old multiplier reel) along with a few others at an auction last week. I decided to give a clean and basic service. There is no sign of any schematics for this reel on the internet (that I could find), and none of Tony's famous tutorials on this forum, so armed with my tool box, I proceeded to take the reel apart. Lots of very old caked on grease, which I cleaned off. Battled to get some of the bits and pieces apart, and then it came time to put everything back together.............
I never listened to the advice, that said take photos of every stage of the disassembly, but do the disassembly in an orderly manner, and lay out the parts in sequence. However I was having a spot of difficulty putting it all back together again. Each time I hit a blank, I did the best thing I know how, I walked away, and next time I came back, I managed a bit of progress. Eventually, I managed to work out the thinking of how they put this reel together, and managed to put everything back, with no extra parts.
SO what did I learn: -
I get VERY frustrated working with tiny fiddly bits and pieces, and reels have lots of them ...
I now understand why Tony is so good at this. He spend his life looking into peoples mouths look at their tiny bits and pieces teeth. He is used to this.
When frustration and lack of progress happens........walk away
A no name / unknown name brand reel, may actually be of good quality and well put together (once you work out their thinking)
Don't expect to do this in 30 minutes - it may take days (for me)
Will take photos next time

I serviced this with the thought in mind to give it away to the gillies we use in the Transkei. Hopefully it will have a useful life down there.

Hi Brandon, I did find these, but the 830H is different, in that it has a retainer plate (similar to the headlight globe on my Land Cruiser........what is it with these designers???) and a switch lever to hold some of the screws in place, which are not on the other models. This was the thing that took me so long to work out what they were doing. The other funny was the stainless steel strengthening bars.....2 of them do not have screws on the one end to keep them in place. They just rest in a vague depression on the one side of the reel, and when you tighten everything up, they are then tight.
I now understand their thinking (still think they could have made it less complicated), and next time will be easier, if there is a next time

The next one to do, is the "IMMEC 150-D". Kind of looks a bit like a Penn 49. Plucking up courage to give it a go. I see lots of star screws (I don't like them), but have plenty of time on my hands, so will likely get started next week
