At the expense of getting it in the neck AND this may have been covered before elsewhere IF so please delete...AND I only know what I read and sea on the interweb and THAT story paints a bleak outlook for our sharks in the oceans...elsewhere on the interweb I am busy having a conflagration about this very subject , where some are saying Nooooo...our sharks are a problem and they need to be "culled" and they say they getting this info from SA based marine biologists who say we have a VERY healthy shark population...NOW...is this just SA coast line ???...coz in my mind most and many sharks move around and cover VAST areas of the seas....
Some thoughts as I am just a weekend warrior fisherman....
I think its important to define what one is referring to when we discuss shark populations. I have no doubt that the global population is down when it comes to sharks as a species.
However, it is still possible that local sub-populations can be thriving and in some cases may have encountered a population explosion. Take the KZN black tips for instance. Anyone who fishes off KZN will attest to the fact that there is no shortage of these fish harassing you.
I think this is where the green beanies can completely derail things. The fact that one sustain-ably harvests individuals from a healthy local population or even culling in too large a population does not impact on global conservation.
Much the same as refusing to cull elephants in Kruger is not assisting in conserving elephants in other regions of Africa.
