Reel Grease
« on: June 04, 2018, 09:43:50 AM »

I’m currently in the process of servicing my reels and 4 of them requires a complete strip and re-lube.

What grease is the best to use nowadays ?

I use Quantum's Hot Sauce reel grease, but not too sure if it is the best. Why? well I've checked reels that I serviced a while ago and have found that the grease is still in the reel still on the gear's/etc however it seemed to have been moved to the sides where say the teeth of the gears stop, thus resulting in poorly lubricated teeth, now I suppose this will be the case with most brands as the grease obviously gets squeezed out between the teeth, however, the gears in my older reels are still fine and shows very little wear even if the grease is only on/in the teeth for a short while.
PS Not all the grease is expelled from the gears, there's always some layer that remains so they're not running dry, just wish there was some way of directing the pressed out grease back into circulation without having to open the reel and doing it manually.
When I die, will somebody please dress up as the Grim Reaper and attend, don't need to do or say anything, just stand there!

I luckily have someone that services my reels and does a good job..He uses corrosion block grease for innards and the corrosion block oil for bearings..Works as advertised..Use the oil for my bearings for spinning.. :) haven't had to replace a bearing since that failed, just spool bearings for yearly maintainance and keep em as backups.

Ya Corrosion Block is the way to go. And they deliver!! Best corrosion protection I've used. Actually use it now on all outside house maintenance as well - rusty hinges  etc

I use yamaha grease for all except, bearings and drag washers. Spool, arb and roller bearings I use corrosionX/ corrosion block (arb just a single drop and access removed with ear bud). Other bearings filled with yamaha (sometimes a mixed ratio of 1:8 corrosion block/x to thin it a little). Drag washers nothing but cal's grease.

Corrosion block is great!

I use the grease on everything and then give a spritz of the oil on to all surfaces draining off the excess before closing up the reel. The service from corrosion block's agent in SA is also great

Used the Corrosion Block grease in the bearings of my Bomba Beach Cart wheels. Drove it through plenty sand, wind and seawater the last trip. Opened them up, still as good as new. Really good stuff.

you can Hrogers, some have used it throughout the whole reel, i think it's a cost thing and maybe more service intervals. (havent used it on gears as i use it sparingly on drag washers, too much will make drag slip under full brakes)

Its lanolin (sheeps wool oil) based, which is a good thing, gets under corrosion and stops it.
Works well.
Nice alternative is fluidfilm aerosol and paste grease.Been used for years on off shore oil rigs and on ships for parts that are exposed to constant saltwater immersion.Nice to see it is now locally available: www.fluidfilm.co.za
