Filling a Grinder with 50/50 mono and braid
« on: November 24, 2017, 08:36:39 AM »
I recently got myself a Daiwa BG6500 to pair with a 13ft rod for fishing edibles. And the reason for the 6500 was because it balanced well with the 13ft rod, the 5000 felt a bit small on the rod. But this thing has crazy line capacity when fishing braid. And I was thinking of using 40lbs braid as my mainline, and to fill the reel I would need ± 700m braid. But how much of that line would ever see the water, and what edible fish out there would be able to pull off that much line?

So my question is, will it be stupid of me to fill the spool with .45/.50 Mono to the point where I can then just add a spool of 300m 40lbs braid? This will save me heaps of money as well.  :tite

Hi

I did that with a BG 5000 and it work Gr8, also use it only for edible fishing. I used .45 as backing and 40lb braid. got around 450m of line on the reel which is plenty

Okay awesome! How did you go about guessing how much mono you can put on before you have to stop so that the full 300m braid can still fit?

No quick way of guesstimating the line really.

Load up 200m of braid now fill it up with mono. Wind line onto another spool. Then wind this onto another spool, now spool up your reel. Braid is on top and mono underneath

Lucky i have a buddy with a tackle shop so spool it on a machine. The best way is to put your 300m braid on then add the mono so that the spool is full. Then take of he mono and braid and the load the mono first. That way it will be perfect. Its easy with a machine, but alot of effort without.

I use empty 600m mono spools and battery drill to do this.  Get a bolt that goes through the spool and that fits into the chuck of the drill. Secure the spool with washers and a LOCK nut. Now you can quickly get the line off the reel and onto another spool, spool onto another empty spool and then reel back onto the reel.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'm going to borrow two empty Multipliers from a friend and use them to flip the mono and braid, and then I can use the Multipliers drag to create tension in the line to spool it on tightly.
