Durban harbour flares needed?
« on: November 22, 2017, 11:50:56 AM »
Sooo, fished the harbour on Saturday night, and had a visit from the police. We try and do the right thing, so all paperwork was in order. After that,  life jackets checked,  in order. Fire extinguishers, in order. To cut a long story short, EVERYTHING was checked, including spare spark plugs. Eventually turned out, 3 of our flares was 10 days past expiry. After being told they don't have the charge book on them,  we were instructed to follow them to the naval base. There they didn't know what to charge us with. The whole process took around 3 hours.  Eventually left with a R500 fine.  since then have heard that flares are not needed on the harbour with a cat r licence. Anyone know if this is true?

thanks guys for the replies.
i know we were being pressured into giving them a backhand, but they picked the wrong boat.
they can harass me the whole night and they wont get a cent!

just some feedback on the fishing. the weather's been really up and down lately, and the fishing was slow.
even the peckers were lazy. a few small grunters kept us interested. all very fat specimens. released to grow a bit bigger.
i did see pics of some better size fish that was landed on sunday evening

and here is the safety equipment list

NOTE: In both documents it is stated that for night fishing your life jackets must be Level 150 - they are huge and hard to stow on a small boat. Our club will not night rate boats in the harbour without level 150 jackets

most boaters dont know this - and I am not sure if the police do either, but once they cotton on then there will be something else to bust you for.

I know someone who was bust for his Savlon being out of date...but then again he was apparently cheeky to the cop!
