Hi all - seeing not much replies I thought let me post back a report after our visit with more info on the dam. it is located between Rayton and Cullinan within the Zonderwater prison grounds- take the N4 East from Pretoria, take the Rayton turn-off and about 10Kms further turn right into the prison compound.
We visited from Tuesday morning 6am until Wednesday 12 July 1pm. Weather was between 20-23 degrees on the hottest part of the day, but the night was freezing.
The dam is not huge, but enough space to cast a line. It has carp and barbell, we only caught carp. Purely catch and release - no keepnets.
Stands are big - about 15-20 meters bank per stand. There are 15 in total and you need to book early as this is a very popular fishing spot. You will probably not break any records here but lots of fun for a day out. And it is extremely safe - on Tuesday night it was only us and 1 other camper sleeping over and no hassles. Prices are very reasonable. No electricity - running water - toilets - and also wheelchair friendly with disabled toilets and the whole landscape is flat. Grass right up to the water. Built in braais between every two stands. Shops 6km away.
We tried various combinations but ultimately found normal canned mielies to do the trick, between 40-60 meter distance worked for us. The angling club and managers are doing a great job here - you will also see several pumps in the water pushing through oxygen, but they were not in the way when fishing. Condition of the fish was excellent. The laaitie beat me with the final fish just before we packed up - a beauty of 3.2 kg's (how do you post pics?) Cannot wait to try Zonderwater in summer time. Herewith a few photos of the place and catches.
Adios
