Crab in the Kowie River
« on: August 03, 2016, 08:00:27 PM »
Hi All

New member here.

I have been an avid fishermen(that doesn't mean good ) for a long time and then about 10 years ago my brother and fishing partner move up to Johannesburg and due to not feeling safe fishing alone, I haven't been out much for all those years.

Back to the topic, I've always heard of the large crab that you get in the Kowie river, but never had a chance to check it out for myself. I will have a few hours to waste over the next few Saturdays as the wife will be attending a few conferences and I am the taxi. Do anyone know of any good spots that I can try out and directions of how to get there. I don't mind if it's a paying spot as long as the fishing/crabbing is good.

Please note that I have never been to PA for fishing only work purposes so if you could include directions, names of streets, any fishing tips etc. it will be much appreciated.

Thanking You in advance.

:welc: Mega. I'm sure someone from the area will be able to help out. Just make sure you get the necessary licenses to catch Crab... don't know what's necessary down that neck of the woods.

:welc: Mega. Hope to hear about your crabbing when you return.

40 years ago, we used to catch a lot crab in the Klenemonde rivers (about 15km up the coast from Kowie). We would go out at night into the shallows with a torch and I was always at the back of the group in the dark. I hated these outings, but my dad always dragged me along for the experience. Those crab scared the &^%$ out of me.

But over the years, the crab disappeared. I guess everyone snacked more of them than was sustainable.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

Hahahahaha, I also used to be terrified, not of the crabs but the abundance of electric rays found in the EC rivers!

:welc: Mega, the Kowie and surrounding rivers are full up with big mud crab... We often hook them on livies and chokka baits lol.

They tend to prefer holes close banks, drop offs and prawn banks... They generally hang around the same areas as Kob.

Do you have access to a boat?

Can't comment on the crab but just be careful when fishing the Kowie, alone or even in a group. Coming from PE if you fish the East side of the river, the same side as the township..., there have been numerous muggings at knife and gunpoint. Not safe at all. If feasible try hire a small boat and go a fair distance up river to get away from undesirables.  Don't park your car on the East side near the large mud bank, you WILL get your window smashed.  :unhap

Yip Dave is right, lots of bad things have happened to anglers at night on the Kowie, especially if you are fishing from the side...

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I think I'll give it a miss as I'll be alone. Will try it when my brother is down on holiday again.
