Fish ID from the Rufiji River
« on: July 27, 2016, 09:36:20 AM »
Hi guys,

So I recently guided clients through Tanzania and spent a couple of days in the Selous. We did a bit of fishing on the Rufiji River, looking for some Tanzanian tigers. One of my clients caught a fish that I am struggling too ID, wondering if anyone can help.

i dont have a photo as I was helping the client out but trying to see if they have one to send.

Anyways, It has the colouration of a Tanzanian Tiger (silver body orange/red fins) except the head is rounded and has teeth almost identical to a Pacu. I am guessing is must be a fruit/nut eating fish and am guessing we were lucky to catch is on a rapala. Our local guide said he had only seen it a handful of times before and referred to it as a "false tiger".

Have been checking everywhere online but just not getting anything with that colouration and dental structure.

Hope someone can help!

Ok so managed to get some photos! Nothing of the teeth but you can get the idea of the fish.

Yeh has a familiar look to it, like i might have seen something similar at a petshop over the years?

It looks like an Imberi, just way bigger. It has the same coloration and that little black adipose fin like a tiger. Here in Limpopo they only get to about 200 mm long. Excellent live bait.

That's exactly what I thought, looks somewhat like Leptobarbus rubripinna but a helluva lot bigger and in totally the wrong continent :rotfl

Hi Crankman,

Yup looks like it is one of the Robber (Alestes) Species. Cant get a positive ID on the exact one as there is very little info on the Tanzania species of Alestes and pretty much no photos!

My suggestion would be to check fishbase.org

Plenty of info there
Acecraft 660 DV
Yeld cat 19 (Sold)
