Trip to Oman
« on: April 03, 2016, 03:17:04 PM »
Had a week in Salalah Oman recently and done a few boat trips between shore fishing. Boat turned out to be more of a party boat or family fishing type set up but we managed to get the skipper to try something different and had some good fishing.

Mornings would start off with getting bait from the locals and they wouldn't except anything in return. Really friendly people.

Spent some time catching Dorado and tini torpedos on live bait and small metal lures around ships anchored up.

Asked the skipper if he knew any jigging marks, the one he took us to turned out to be a sailfish mark. My first down got hit buy a sailfish which came flying out the water. It threw the jig which when hit the water came straight back out with a second sailfish flying into the air only to throw the jig again.

We changed to live bait and boated about 10 sailfish at this mark over the next few days, good few lost also. This was between 2 groups of us.

The main target species of the trip was YFT and were told we needed to find the dolphins first. We found ourselves 37 k's out with not a snif of them but managed to spot a small marlin on the surface which took a livebait.

Next trip we found ourselves even further out but still not a sniff of any YFT. We decided to go back inshore when we spotted a turtle stuck up in rope and set it free.

We managed to cut the rope and as the turtle swam off we looked up and were surrounded by dolphins

Idea was to race ahead of the dolphins and throw out a livebait and continue the same operation, sort of fire and move haha.

Andy had the first

Glyn lost one after nearly having his reel spooled but managed the next fish.

Thought it was not going to be my day but my turn came next. After a epic fight and watching my 14000 size reel becoming empty on the first run I landed a slab.

And was fortunate to land another

Looks more like a spearfish to me rather than a marlin. Could have been valuable to scientific research.
How did it taste compared to the sail?
