Mackrel vs bonnie
« on: March 19, 2016, 10:00:12 AM »
Hi guys

I recently purchased some bonito to slide in the kosi bay area. I originally in my excitement for the trip thought they were mackrel. Any advice as to whether bonnies are good slide baits?  I do also have some smaller mackrel to slide. Also if you can advice what fish like those baits?

Thanks

Bonito ID: http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=86.0

Bonnies (Sarda sarda) and Eastern little tuna are generally brilliant baits, the best! - 1st prize for Ineds: Blackfin sharks, Raggies and Greys. Even better than Mackies.
The "bonnies" being sold lately are however, most often Skipjack tuna - which I've personally found to be a poor alternative to the others.

Thanks . Looking at the pics in the link they are definitely not skipjacks. They have stripes on the back. So one of the bonitos!  Will try post a pic once I get home.
