Rules On Mullet
« on: September 09, 2015, 12:15:57 PM »
I was hoping someone could shed some light for me on the rules on catching Mullet.

Are you allowed to gooi a net? restricted area's ?

are you allowed to use another way to catch them for live bait? (have an idea but not sure on the restrictions)

I am from Richardsbay and as far as i know you are only allowed to gooi a net in the canal and not passing the steel bridge?

 :dunno: :dunno:

Some info I have:

Cast Net Rules, Bag Limits & Regulations In South Africa

A cast net may not be used between sunset and sunrise or in any other dark hours. The following is a table of fish species that are the ONLY species allowed to be caught in a throw net:

Hi you are correct about catching with a cast net in the canal up to the steel bridge at Richardsbay. You are allowed to catch them with conventional tackle in the harbour at the places you are allowed in the harbour? Make sure to have a castnet license issued at Richardsbay as they only issue a certain amount a year at the post office. Not sure if a castnet license not issued at Richardsbay is accepted, have heard by local fisherman it must be issued at Richardsbay. Lots of mullet at T jetty at the moment.

There are region specific Cast net rules as well. Eg, you're not allowed to use Cast nets in many estuaries in KZN, like Maphelane and the Umfolozi.

Just make sure you check the regulations. South Africa is very strict on capture methods, and bait collection techniques.

As far as I know you are only allowed to catch Mullet on a rod, reel, and hook and a cast net  :dunno:

I made myself a wire version of that trap to catch bait fish for tiger. I was using both in a small river bordering one of our small provincial reserves up here, the game guards (enviroment affairs) noticed me from inside the reserve and came to see what I was up to. They confiscated my cast net, but had no problems with the trap??? I think it was more to do with what they wanted than what was the law.
