guinjata bonanza 2015
« on: June 17, 2015, 10:25:24 AM »
just a quick trip report from the bonanza that we fished last week

the drive up was uneventful and the border crossing was swift and had no issues with the dreaded mozambique cops

we left the wednesday before the comp to prep the boat and get a pre fish in which unfortunately did not happen has the weather turn out to quite foul with a large swell and high winds which stuck around till sunday.
the forecast for the comp turn out to be very good and all 5 days where fishable.

we arrived on the beach on monday to a washing machine bay with a massive side wash causing plenty wide eyed moments.
we are lucky enough to have a tractor that we leave up in moz (which gave us a fair amount of crap due to a dirty fuel tank),so we opted to delay our launch and help the other boats launch and avoid any mishaps and after pushing most of the boats in with the tractor we only launched at about 9am.

we fished for about a hour when we received a call from beach control asking us to assist with a jet ski that had dropped his keys into the ocean due to a double up on dorries causing havoc and the chap fell of the ski and lost keys in the process.
lines up and off we went finding the chap and towing him back to the beach and that was pretty much our day 1 done with little time to fish.

the rest of the week the surf settled and we had 4 awesome days at sea, fishing wise it was pretty slow mixing it up between sailfish spreads jigging a bit and some game fishing slow trolling baits.
we had a saily in the spread for a brief moment but sadly she had commitment issues :dunno:

some pics

the view rather crap weather pre comp

improving weather

view from balcony with the large swell.....well for moz anyway

tackle ready to go

your most acceptable digs for the week

while building some walla traces kobus had a run in with 2 4 X owner trebles eina bliksem after a self extraction we treated the fingers with some hydrogen peroxide and 2 days later his fingers healed up nicely..........one tough oke i cringe just thinking about it at least we had a double up before the comp started

some more pics

towing the jetski back......still manage to put out 2 rappies for the ride back

some fish jigging think a black tip kingie and a bludger  :dunno: also managed some yft and cuta on the jig.
we also got absolutely smoked twice once on a mh outfit and the other a heavy outfit can only think they were beeeeg  :gt: gonna have to tackle up next time

some couta on the slow troll

best way to get around in moz

your chariot awaits

as for the results the barthos did it again this time winning the boat with a 31kg gt they also lead the species comp the entire week
prize boat

winning fish

winner of the jet ski ricus bateman with a 21kg geet

till next year.......................

Nice one Gary, those Bartho boys are top anglers.

That the Kingie Kobus is holding is a yellow spot I think.

What gear where you guys using that day you got reefed?

Nice report, pitty about your fishing pre comp but sure it was better than work.
Geez, those Bartho's are champions.
I do however feel the rules should change, Why does a GT count for the main prize, but not a marlin or sail? Should be for game fish excl the billfish, and resident species, AJ and GT. Ie tuna, cuda or hoo. No disrespect to the winnerts, they are within the laws, but why kill big GT's. Sure a 700k boat is a pretty good incentive, but how many other 25-30kg ones were killed as well in the hope it would be tops.
It seems thats a great comp, but I am definately not a good enough all rounder to compete. Need to have an A game in all facets to stand a chance.

most defiantly a touchy subject i can say that there are sticker/measuring tape issued to all boats and that gt and ambers are measured photographed and released and points awarded so mortality rates have been reduced

I don't think the Barthos are too happy with the rules as they stand to be honest, def room for improvement - I like the species comp, that's real angling IMO but the Natal boys were cleaning up every year so they changed the rules to make it more 'luck'

Nice report. I am glad for the Bartho brother, so this is boat nr 3 they have won. I agree they should never have made it a bonanza comp. When it was a species comp you could measure against  the best species anglers which unfortunately the Bartho bros were dominating. This should be a motivating factor to fish against such good fisherman. We have had the same in the Mynmanne and it is not dominated by one team but a couple of teams are normally in the running. I've heard stories of fisherman complaining that the Barthos are commercials and all other crap, I can assure you they are great guys and hard working fisherman on the boat. Top class guys to know and to compete against. Guinjata comp is great but just to far to travel. Tight lines gents.
