Hi
Is the hook behind the head fixed to the line or free sliding  ?
and does the hook on the side off the body first go through the skin behind the head then hooked on the side ?

No both hooks are fixed with knots. 2nd (bottom) hook is only pierced lightly through the skin.

Another way of doing it is to hook the front (top) hook through the top lip...

I have found it better to put the second hook thru thru the top lip so that it keeps the baits mouth open so that their is allways water flowing onto the gills. Doing it the way you have it on the pic works very good but the bait doeas not stay alive for that long. If the fish are biting ten this method works tops.

Secondly the hook that is in the mid body. Before titening the knot onto the hook place a piece of leader about 20-30mm in between the knot and the hook eye. This will stop the the hook from folding flat and lying against the baits body. Their for staying proud at all times.

Just out of interest, which hook catches the fish/shark?

Want to make up some live bait traces with Kosi Bay in mind . Should I stick to the .90 Nylon or would say 60 to 90lb steel be a safer option ?

Nylon for targetting GT's is best - 1mm.
150lb steel for Sharks.
Problem is a Blackfin doesn't know that your bait is for a GT... so I generally use steel, unless you're in a protected bay, where you can take a chance with Nylon.

My method for kob..
Piece of toothpic under the skin to prevent the hook tearing out and hook goes thru under it(1st hook behind the head)
Fish swallow the bait head first.

With Micro Mike Gareth Walks being my Live bait Gilly , was just a little worried that the 150lb might be to heavy on a small livey .

Precisely what I was thinking. What about 100lb steel as an all-rounder Tony?

Is that not going to decrease your hook up rates for a Kingie though?

Hi BigBen - Do you use a toothpick on a slide or only if you throw/cast a live bait?
I used a slide for the first time this weekend.  What an experience. Was always so poep bang to give it a go.
I use the same set up as you, except my fron hoek goes through the top lip.  No toothpicks used.

Good question Krissi , i think it varys from predator to predator . so if the livey is taken from the front then its the front hook , but some predators will go for the belly or and the back section to immobilise the prey so that it cant escape and then can feed at leisure , so then its the back hook that gets eaten , ive made up some live bait traces with the back to back hook idea , the smaller hook( 4/0- 6/0) thru the skin of the livey behind the dorsal and the bigger hook (8/0 10/0 or 12/0 circle) standing proud or laying flat against the live bait , i think the placing of the hook with this method is important though as to keep bait alive and make sure u get a hook up when the predator strikes , also the trace i use is half heavy mono/ leader like 1mm from the non-return slide and then the bottom half to the hook(s) is 100/150 lb steel for in case a toothy one gets on the end , i join the mono to steel with a albright as well .

Interesting... But cant a Blackfin bite through 100lb quite easily? Is there no point fishing lighter than 1 mil and praying the taxman doesnt come and collect?

Mike had a good idea using steel on the bottom section. Personally, I would just go straight 100lb steel with two 6/0 to 8/0 hooks depending on the bait size.

Its not the biting thru it the jumping winding the steel round the body and flexing that pops the steel .. :rck"
