spliting paddle tail

has any body else had problems with there lures splitting where they go over the collor of your jig head more importantly is there any way to avoid it happening

Never happened to me but I have seen guys glue there lures on to the jig with supper glue. I don't do it my self. Think that can cause you to have to strike harder than usual to set the hook. Witch lures are you using?

Haven't had that before. Maybe the collar is too thick but I think you need to use a bigger plastic. Have you tried to strengthen the neck part with latex after you hooked it?

smiley6996 , is it a old paddle tail or a newish one..?? , i find that some batches of soft plastics tend to loose there elasticity quickly and age harden  and split when attaching on the jighead ....  :dunno:

was brand new out of the bag onto the jig but not the first one maybe i just get bad luck thou how would i strenthen them with latex

Smiley I have never done it but my suggestion is that you bind only the collar part with latex as soon as you attached it. This may prevent it from tearing and slipping down.

Smiley I had the same issue with that combo.The soft lures are great but I found split a little easy with those jigheads
 as the collar is quite wide. Even for the lures I make I found taking some meat off the collar seemed to help.

I reckon you are right about the bad combo I was thinking of making a hole in the nose of my tails give the jig a bit more room but would be easier to just file them down a few mills nice looking paddle tail you have there I have only used McCarthy so far

Those are the fiish black minnow lures.A weedless style soft plastic combo but very expensive.I've modified the body and made a mould for pouring soft plastics.Now just use them with jigheads.

I always cut a small piece off the front so that the Jighead is inline with the Soft Plastic's body. I have never experienced that the front part of the body tears open.

I do the same when I use the swanale jig heads but I like fishing off the bricks so been going for the mad mullet heads witch are cheaper and don't get stuck as easy I find anyway love those heads for the surf they hug the the bottom think the best option for mm heads is going to be file the heads down a peanut and make a hole in the front of the lure as well  to allow for the thicker collar

Never seen that type of rip in a Plastic .


Many years ago we used a lighter to heat up the collar a lil bit , and then slide the plastic over , this seemed to work very well , even after , you PD has slid of the collar .


I also like mentioned trim the head of for a better fit .

I think heating the head would help I  see the deep sea guys heat up a wire and melt a hole in there lures to help them fit on there giant jig heads thanks for all the replys
