Galvanizing

Hi guys,


I am thinking of building my own roof rack.
Can anyone please advise where i can get galvanizing dip done, in Cape Town, preferably in the Southern Suburbs or Southern Peninsula?
Help would be much appreciated.

While on the topic, has anybody any idea what it would presently cost to re-galvanise a medium sized boat's trailer. Does it have to be sand blasted first to get the original coat off and does extra/additional galvanising take on the old galvanising. I presume any rust will have to be sand blasted.

Imagine its a costly affair.

We encountered this problem with an old trailer that we wanted to be galvanised, it had been made from a mixture of galvanised and un galvanised material, to get rid of the old galvanising would have meant pickling the trailer in an acid bath sand blasting and then galvanising, this wasn't going to be a quick job so we elected to sandblast and spray with hamerite

@Dodger, I heard of Hamerite been sprayed directly on steel and no rusting.
If i build a steel roofrack and spray with hamerite, do i need to galvanize or would the hamerite do the job of rustproofing it?
I assume hamerite dont come in spray cans? My damn compressor broke recently. If i have to fix the compressor and build the rack, it would probably cost the same as buying a rack from the shops.

For a roof rack you can brush it on, I have painted my old venter trailer lid this way and it looks ok. Hamerite will act similar to galvanising for rust proofing, it is not as good as galvanising, but it does work and any scratches / damage you can touch up. I think it is a very good affordable product.

Do you need to apply any kind of undercoat, like NS4 for example, or can you apply it onto raw steel?
Can one go over it with a spray can of clear lacquer to seal it better and give a nicer finish?

you can if you want to, but Hamerite looks ok as it is

You get all sorts of paint in a can these days. If I were you I would give it two coats of primer and then two coats of your preferred colour. The thing with spray is there should not be any rust on the metal befor you spray it and you have to make sure you cover all services.  If the water can not get to the metal, the metal can not rust. Did my roof rack with two coats of primer and two thick coats of 2k. Will fit it the weekend.

Nice Pieta
My vehicle has factory fitted rails, so need to make 2x cross bars to fit onto that. Going to buy 2 of those Stainless steel lockable rod racks and fit it onto the cross members, which i am going to make.
