Perch spots in the Western Cape
« on: August 14, 2014, 10:30:24 PM »
Hi All
I am one of these weird fly fishermen who enjoys catching fish like bluegill and cape kurper and other small things no one is particularly interested in targetting. I am trying to find a spot to target perch (Perca fluviatillis) but as it is a fish no one is interested in there is very little on the internet. I know Paardevlei used to have them but it was rotenoned which put an end to the perch. Does anyone know where I may find perch in the Western Cape? If so I would greatly appreciate any info. Please drop me a PM or post here. Thanks :)

I know certain areas in the Berg river has them for a fact !

I have also seem ones get caught in Sonstraal dam a few years ago , you can't fish there anymore apparently ...

And Behind Willowbridge mall , theres a small channel , theres perch there too , I would assume them that the top part of the channel , which include , Bellwaterpark , Majic forest and the upper Welgedagth pond would have too .

I use to fish these systems often when I was younger .

David I share your passion in catching those types of fish not many target. I have always wanted to catch Perch or Cape Kurper on fly. Have tried unsuccessfully for Cape Kurper once.

I know some spots in Gauteng, but let me chat to a friend I have in the WC and see if he can provide me with some info.

I can help you with a Cape kurper spot no problem. Gobos River in Greyton. I last time I fished it I stopped counting after the first hour at 40 fish. Got bored at around 90. There are quite a few there and they make small bluegill look like brain surgeons. If you are ever in the Western Cape in summer and you feel like catching some just shout.

Thanks. If you can find out something I would really appreciate it. There are some in Hogsback which will be more convenient when I am in grahamstown next year. Otherwise I have a couple of spots from lenny to try.

I have contacted him. My parents know him quite well. Also tried Leonard Flemming. Neither of them knew of anywhere. I was surprised I must admit.
