Hole in the wall
« on: May 27, 2014, 07:41:17 AM »
Hi guys, at the end of June I'll be going on a long awaited trip to HITW. We are going with a group of teachers and none of us have been there before. I know we can expect to get shad and kob there, but what about other species like garrick and bream. Where are good spots to slide for game fish? Heard about Queens, but we have some retired guys going with us, and dont think its very safe. Is it safe to fish at night? We'll be staying at the hotel. None of us are really into ineds fishing, but we do slide for garrick, kob, etc. I've read up on IanF's reports, very informative, just looking for more advice. Would it be agood idea to throw paddletails, where?

Thanks
Keane

Hi Keane

the ideal spot would be Mbolompo as this area can throw just about any fish and is also easier to fish, especially for the senior gents.

Queens can get scary when theres a rough sea but its always occupied with locals. Safety is always an issue in the Kei, just make sure you treat the locals with respect and you will be well looked after.

take a chance with your paddletails at Mbolompo at the south side. I had great success with the kob there but on bait. But they do come thick when the timing is right.

I may be going to HITW in 2 weeks time. Will post an update

Hi Keane

Mbolompo is south of HITW and I would estimate about half hours drive.

you can slide at there as its a deep water point.

Keane, if your staying at the Hotel I would rather fish Black Rock and Nthongwane....! I was there a month ago and the road to Mpolombo is real bad my frind. Try it if you wish but dont break your car doing so! I would also suggest Umtata River Mouth! Nice for the older folk...! Tight Lines! :fshn:

the best spot there in my opinion in Mhlungwane...
You need 4 x 4 and a permit to drive there, but the all round fishing is good.
2 options to the main point, either down the mountain or accross the gully to the point where you can slide, or if you after normal rock fish you can fish straight infront of where you park your cars...

My favourite place on the hole in wall coast...

Also find attached the application form. Forward the completed application form along with a map (Example attached) of the area you wish to fish with a copy of your fishing license. Hope this helps a bit.

My 2c worth...

Mhlungwane is accessible by 4x4, and is close by. If you go to Mhlungwane, there are ledges to the north of that point which fish well for kob etc. It fished well when we were there in January. Mbolompo point is a bit of a sefety concern, and was not accessible in January when we went.
You can fish the rocks to the right of the hotel (North of the Hole itself) called Queens. Good luck landing anything large there. You should get shad there, but if the sea gets on, its simply too dangerous. If that is the case, just fish the bay in front of the hotel. Black Rock is also an option (to the North of the bay in font). I wouldnt fish any pocky points at night.

I would just stick to the spots in walking distance. And be careful.

crackers - no, not anywhere I saw possible. Use sard or prawn, but the river looked dead to me. totally. i believe cob may come in at night on a full tide. can fish there at night.
bay in front - you can fish at night. but low tides it comes quite shallow, with a very long sandbank. easiest to fish off the rocks at the left hand side of the bay or try the right hand bay. so you best to try on the full tide.

We will be down there from 21 to 28 June, staying at our normal cottage. Looks (at this stage) like we have a full trip of 16 people, some of who will not be fishing. Can't wait!!!
