Ponta trip April 2014
« on: May 05, 2014, 09:59:42 AM »
Hi Guys, well to put it simply i was hoping to be able to post quite a few nice pics of fish caught during our Ponta trip but alas we had it tough and not much fish where caught   . We had 12 days in Ponta and only managed to launch 4 times for an early morning session before the winds picked up :unhap . We had 1 morning where the wind was not too bad and i decided to go out to the 180m -200m line to pull a few konas in the hope of cathing a bill or getting a few YFT we caught quite a few bonnies and managed to get a hookup with a marlin :-) . The marlin took a mouldcraft softie purple over black , sitting just behind the propwash, i was watching the spread at the time and saw him come in and smack the kona was awesome to see, unfortunately my knot pulled after a 15 min fight/run so i was quite dissapointed as this would have been my first marlin!!

We did have some fun with our flick sticks catching bonnies on small sprat spoons, and on one occasion we had another marlin jump out right next to the boat whilst myself and a my mate where both on with bonnies! There was about 8 other boats in Ponta during the time we where there and in total for the 12 days amongst the boats there i saw the following fish caught: +- 8 couta, 1 very nice prodigal son of about 18kg, 2 dorado,+-  12 YFT. The week prior to us arriving the weather was apparently great and i heard of 2 marlin, 2 sails quite a few shoal cuta and a number of YFT's being caught.

Oh well we still had fun, had a hook up on a marlin and got to spend some quality time with the wife and kids on the beach. Hopefully the weather plays ball next time!

Cheers

I know the feeling. We went all the way to Inhanssoro for two weeks. First 4 days were OK ish then the wind picked up and we never managed to launch again. Did catch in the first 4 days but very disapointed about the rest of the time. To rub salt in the wounds the wife caught the biggest fish, a tuna, during those 4 days and makes this fact known to everyone at every opertunity that presents itself.

Hi Lhooker good to hear some news on Ponta. Fishing has been tough over the last two years. At least you had some fun. I am going for a week this Friday. Thinking strongly of not taking the boat and maybe charter Burt or GozaAzul for a day. I am just so fed up with all cost to just fish for a week that it is not worth it any more. Fishing license, boat license, crew license ,fuel tax at border , these cost is more than our yearly club fees and seaworthy and fishing license for a year and then is the fishing still tough. Worst off is the poor Gillie who needs the money for food but it is taken away by the other culprits. Will get him to wash the car to at least help him. Sorry for the moan but I know we have discussed this the previous trip. Tight lines chomma come visit in the winter at the Bay.

Hi Stephan pity we missed you this year, enjoy your stay and have a safe trip down. Yes its getting very expensive and the fishing is not as good as it was a few years back. However i can say that the bait fish are there in huge schools with loads of bonnies and YFT (If only the weather had played along i'm sure we would have been into some good fish). The bait balls and birds are sitting directly out too see off  the lighthouse from the 80m to 200m drop off, there is definatley bills in the area! The guys that we met before we left they where on jetskis and dropped 2 marlin in that area the day before we arrived and i had 1 marlin strike and saw another jump right next to the boat, so might be an option to take the boat if the weather is going to be good to chase a few bills and YFT?? Tight lines drive safe and let us know how it went. Cheers bud and yes need to make a plan this year to come visit  :-)

Yip thats the way it goes! The main line to leader! I used some see through tube over the leader instead of a thimble (think its called that) to make the loop (cripmed off ), tied the main to the leader with a double fishermans knot and think the knot tightened onto the tube and slipped??
