what line for my new reel?

I've just got myself a daiwa exceler 4000. Its quite smooth. My question is, what line should I fill it with? There are 2 spools

What do you intend using it for ?

I have the 3000 and i use it for dropshot and spinning, I have 1 spool filled with 10lb Fireline, and the other with 20lb Braid.

I guess it all depends on what type of fishing you are going to do... I would do what Homie says I think thats the right plan, otherwise I would load it with 14-18lb xx...

Agreed something light (8-10lb) and something heavier (18-24lb) i would say.. Will cover almost all facets of fishing for that reel size...

i would then full one up with 10-15lb if you want light to medium or 20-30lb if you want medium to heavy spiderwire ez braid its under R200 for 300m or yards! not sure and will outlast mono by a long way!
then say 10lb-15lb mono should be fine

yeah will get what u said. how do i fill the reel with line? which knots etc? i've only bought reels with line already on

I assume you're using braid now to fill the reel?

Tie the briad to the spool with the Arbor Knot... see knots section. Once it's tight, take some sellotape and put a ring of sellotape onto the knot to stop it slipping. Spool the reel as tight as you can - this means really tight. A person holding the spool of line for you should need gloves otherwise his hands will get burnt - thats how tight it needs to be. If you put the braid on too loosely, the top layer of braid cuts into the bottom layers under pressure, and causes havoc with windknots. By tight, I mean that after 10-15 turns of the handle, you need a rest for a few seconds!

Once you've spooled up, you tie the Braid to leader with a 7turn Uni/Fig 8 knot... then ready to fish!

Haven't been here for a while

Quick question, do i need to change the rod eyes if i put braid? I've heard something along those lines so just wanna confirm.............

What rod are you using? Decent rods have Fuji or better guides... which shouldn't be a problem.

It's an 8ft Masterod Strike graphite composite rod. Its a lil oldish. Do i need to change the guides?

Shewie... don't know the rod... but if it's an old one, chances are the guides are plastic ringed on the inside, which wouldn't be good for braid at all?

I recently went through pretty much the the same exercise - bought as lightish spinning set-up.

This is what I did:

Spool 1 - 20lb Saltiga Braid and 22lb leader
Spool 2 - 10lb Saltiga Braid and 12lb leader

In order to provide grip to the spool I prefer to use plumbers thread tape on the back as I find the glue of insulation or sellotape deteriorates and becomes a gummy mess after a while. Then (as per reefman) arbour knot to join the braid to spool. Spool it up very tightly. Then bimini to double fig 8 leader to braid join.

As for the guides: I would definitely make sure that they are rated to handle braid as the braid will not only chow plastic guides for lunch, the braid itself will also get stuffed up once grooves are formed in the guides.

If you on a budget then I would suggest Spiderwire EZ braid.  Got the 20lbs on my Symetre 4000 and I really have no complaints.  Have made lots of throws and not a single windknot.  What i did was I asked the shop where I bought the braid to spool it on for me.  Throws a 2oz spoon a mile

Just checked the rod & the guides are plastic ringed on the inside. Will get these changed and spool up with some Spiderwire EZ braid.

Rods, have u caught any good sized fish on this braid?

I had a look at a spool of Spiderwire the other day... Homie had one.

Very interesting that you can't tell the difference between it and Berkley Whiplash... looks EXACTLY the same! Then surprise surprise... read the manufacturer's address on the box... comes out exactly the same factory as Whiplash... except, get this... at HALF the price!??!!??! WTH?!
