Hout bay tuna derby 2013 day 1

Hout bay tuna derby 2013 5-9 Nov

The first day of fishing in the hout bay tuna derby started out with all the anticipation one can muster!

The weather was great, the water was crystal clear but the tuna stayed deep, after lines up at 3pm most boats were lucky to have seen a tuna rather than hooked one!

We managed three hookups on jigging rods behind a trawler but lost all three due to a comibination of two tackle failures and a pulled hook, those three fish were large as they all nearly stripped the 20000 reels hence having to turn up the drag and then the split ring broke....what luck!

so all in all a tough day to be on the water, but at least our boat had three knocks.

The heaviest fish for day one was an 81,9kg YFT.

Today and tomorrow (wed/thu have been blown out) so we are looking forwards to getting out on day 4 for some more action!

to be continued........ :fshn:

finally got that YFT now for the YFT on a jig!

tough luck about the tunas giving you a bit of stick, with those gasbottles all tackle must be perfect...those things happen...looking forward to hear from you again...hope you get some busses... :yft: you don't know anyone by the name of Dave Dawson perhaps..?I used to fish with him when I lived in C.T. and have lost contact, trying to find him again...him and his crew once won the tuna derby that's held from Gordons bay I think it was, with a tunny of 96kg...
Always be humble...

Apologies on the long delay!

I missed the last days fishing due to a Bachelors, so in the end I only had two days on the water, the second day was much the same as the first, very slow and not much activity. We ended up hooking into a 66kg tuna on the troll back to the harbour (typical the final 30minuites before lines up).

Unfortunately we headed South while some other boats went West, is appears Anuqa boated two bus's :yft: :yft: one was over 100kg's and as far as i know that was the winning fish, im not one hundred precent sure though?

Hey 7/10's is your boat the Dragon? the guys did well, although i'm not sure if they told you about dropping a  size tuna at the scales which then slid into the harbour water and was taken by a seal in a flash  :hehe: (bat we tried to help get the fish back but no luck.............

I heard a bout a week ago the commercial boat we landing plenty fish, pity the weather windows are so small at the moment.

will update if i manage to get out over the dec break!

no photos as the wasn't much to take photo's of

finally got that YFT now for the YFT on a jig!
