Am report on our East Coast from Gonubie to Kei

  Mornings East Coasters....ONCE AGAIN we approaching an iffy weekend with regards to conditions for fishing....As I left home this morning for work the barometer was sitting at a very solid 1027hpk and still climbing !!!......[/size]NOW...should that hold , we in for a serias wet beastly eastlu BUT should that cold front behind it pick up some speed we could very well be in for a pretty windless weekend....should the latter prevail , well then , we might just be in luck and get some fish....[/font]
The water temp is still at a chilly 15 , but its still clean and the swell still did look a bit up on the Gonubie wild side , swell prediction inshore is around the 4 to 6 foot mark BUT please remember we have just come off of a bright moon spring...
Watch those tides as they turn to push , tomorrow sees you with a high at 04h51 and on Sunday at 05h20 ...so , both mornings a nice outgoing tide ...Spots to look out for would be Glen Gariff....Queensberry ...Kwelera...the two Cintsa and Glen Navaar and Muir could very be well worth a look IF this wind does not arrive....at the moment it is already light and variable....
From now untill tomorrow mid day would be a good window of opportunity for a fish as then I think that second cold front will come into play...much speculation has been going on in the Jikeleza wattsapp group and I must admit , the weather reports and websites have us all betwixt and between ..hehehehe
Be that as it may , the adage still stands...JUST GO FISH!!!!
Shad have been coming out and your deep water points along the Jikeleza would also be worth a look...where there are shad there are the bigger fish!!!

  Mornings East Coasters ....well weve just come off a bright moon spring and actually heading into a somewhat iffy weekend as far as fishing conditions are concerned....there is a fairly serious looking front approaching the Cape , although in the last 12 hours it has slowed quite a bit due to being squeezed a tad by those two high pressures...What is of interest is the coastal low coming along our coast line and this should keep things fairly comfortable and fishable...[/size]The sea state is at 1 and swell will be running between 2 to 5 foot with a very small movement from a high to low tide and no surge predicted or expected as yet...water is clean and the temp touching the 20 mark...[/font]
You have a low at 05h40 tomorrow and at 06h45 on Sunday morning ...both mornings will see a slight north wester puffing ...that front off of the Cape will probably only make landfall late Monday early Tuesday and with those highs squeezing it will probably drop a lot of water in Cape Town...they need it!!
How that front is going to affect us this weekend I am not sure BUT one thing is for certain ...ALL bony fish will sense that dropping baro LONG before we even see the glass drop....
Soo..my humble opinion ...Sunday AM will be the window of opportunity and I see tomorrow AM being a bit dead ....
Nice tides for our Jikeleza with an early AM push I would try out the Cintsa beach areas and Cefane as well.....Glen Gariff off the front ledges fishes well on the push , just be wary of that Bulugha point on a push....shad are still around and the odd kobbie has been coming as well...
When the conditions are iffy like this with a fairly small calm sea it is always good to make a trippie and try out the outer limits of the jikeleza...Double Mouth...Haga...Morgan bay areas.....especially between Haga and Double Mouth....its worth the walk ...

  Mornings East Coasters...well well well...FINALLY some decent sardine action along the Natal South Coast and from the intel coming in its been some very good hauls by the netters...THIS then is a very good sign and at this time of the year I always have mixed feelings about a good sardine run , coz on the one hand they keep the kob away and the other hand , a good run sets up the summer fishing season very nicely!!![/size]According to those in the know , these first shoals are pilot ones and a HUGE bait ball was spotted deep south off of the TK coast line this past week!!!....[/font]
Moving onto this weekends fishing....we have just come past the winter solstice this past Wednesday and now moving forward the days will get longer and the sun will be getting up a tad earlier...not noticeable the next two months BUT by end of August we will start seeing the light slightly earlier...
With this in mind , we are also now on a dark moon spring this weekend and , yes , a fair surge is expected and with a swell of between 4 to 7 foot running , its a sure thing to watch those tides as they go from dead low to that push especially that first two hours of the push and the last hour before full high....
Tomorrow you have a low at 10hoo and on Sunday at 10h40..
Both mornings are good out going tides and we all know the Jikeleza fishes well on an outgoing and especially early AM...
Both days look damn fine for some decent fishing and albeit the air temp will be chilly , we have a good sea temp at around 18 and colour is spot on...wind will be light north wester with that high ridging in after this cold front has passed and the baro is topping out at 1023hpk and probably too steady for my liking BUT I think the reef fish are gonna be on the bite...poensie,,silvers ...MAYBE a pig...kob will be in the pot as well and of course the ever present shad at this time of the year!!!...
I think the shark fisherman are also licking their lips at the prospect of a few fast sharks around namely tips and BEEG greys and the likes of LEGENDS [/color]Justin du Preez and Greg Kellermann will no doubt be out n about this weekend at their fave spots with a big bait out!!!
As to spots /??...well ..you would be hard pressed to find the right cadence this weekend as most IF not ALL the Jikeleza deep water points will be on line this weekend and especially the beach areas on the dead low as that tide starts to push....
Folks...it almost looks like a "perfect storm" for this fishing weekend and choose your spot carefully and you have NUMEROUS to choose from!!!

Ja, hope that you are recovering Kent..miss your fishing reports!

Regarding the leeries..the stock has collapsed..at some point it is going to be officially recognised, the scientists been saying that it has collapsed since the early 2000's when the stock was in a lot better shape than now. the main stock has been off the kei for the last age, where they are getting further hammered, the eastern cape stocks are hammered beyond after years of us carefully releasing them trying to help the stock claw its way back, it actually was starting to get pretty good when there as a few years without any sardine runs..those fish never came back after the last few sardine runs..Last time I saw lots of breeding size leeries was 3 seasons back and where we fish we are traditionally in the thick of it..My numbers of leeries caught and released spinning (of which most were large-xlarge size) from the side were 3 seasons ago : maybe 15-20 fish, last season 1 fish and this season none. We had one day off the boat this season where the found the mass of rats and it was cast for cast on the 2-5kg jobbies, with fish chasing and nipping at my FG knot (2 sessions in a row fish were doing that, so over high vis braid haha) and hooks pulling and another fish jumping on a few times and typically a few fish swimming with each fish being caught..we lost count of the fish caught and released and those fish that went north 3 years back made some babies! Last year throwing net for mullet in southern cape rivers, I was catching more of those handsize yellow/silver babies than baitfish, so there are enough little ones for recruitment of a future stock, and they grow quickly. But, the fish that made those rats and babies are gone..the stock can recover but it needs a concerted effort from all who fish for them north and south to conserve that stock of little ones that are around and few big fish that are left.

But ja..kenty not a leerie man..those cob are missing you boet, hope that you are fishing again!

Mornings Folks...well since my last post in June of 2017 was around the time I had a nasty incident on the rocks...since then I have probably fished once after that incident which was in the August 2017 and then never touched my beloved SL30 and spoons again UNTIL two weekends ago and went for a throw...happy to report that Im still a fisherman ..hehehe...anyhow , will keep the Friday updates coming and here is the report for this weekends fishing....as far as the leeries go , this year I will be at a local leerie spot called Cove Rock and that will be in November , last year they actually got some very good catches and I do believe ALL fish were released. The run lasted for a week and then the leeries moved off towards Natal....so looking forward to this November...

[/color][/size]NOW there is a bit of an IF ...IF the two inland lows decided to push south we may just just be in the luck with a bit of west to warm and clean the water a bit....last night as I trotted past the Gonubie point area the sharkie fraternity were out in full force and with the flatish and chilly water I wonder if they got and heavyweight pulls???...[/font]
The barometer has so much pressure in it adn should and will top out tomorrow until at least Sunday midday at a staggering 1028hpk...ONE huge beastly eastly gonna puff tomorrow...not nice at all...
Sunday morning , with that cold front pushing in , the baro might start to drop and the wind will be very light variable....this then would be this weekends best window of opportunity for a throw....
Tides are somewhat off for our Jikeleza , should you want an early AM start ...Our Jikeleza fishes well on an outgoing to low and especially early AM....Low tide is midday on bothe days and not really conducive to productive fishing ...
Saturday sees you with a high tide at 06h20 and on Sunday at 07h08...we have just come off of a dark moon spring and no surge is expected ...the swell will be at 3 to 6 foot inshore and running at a east/north eastly direction and with the east wind you may find that your bait and sinker will have a sideways drift....
Well , I really dont have much else to report other than timing this weekend will be crucial and Sunday AM will certainly be your best bet...spots to look out for would be Glen Garif....Cefane as that tide turns and possibly Glen Navaar and Muir on the turn of the tide ...with this coolish water , remember that there may just be a pig or two out there...
Remember , please pick up the litter!!!

  Well Folks ..let me tell you ...the lack of me writing and giving reports here is NOT from lack of interest OR being slack ..Its just that for at least the last 10 months or more its been ATROCIOUS and just plain crap conditions along our East coast...last weekend was the first time in a very long time that I saw conditions that suit my kinda fishing specifically and true to the conditions I was kept busy by "bumping" kobbies only thing was that the water itself was pretty chilly...


Im hoping to give more feed back going forward as I see some really good looking systems approaching our bit of coast line..


Soo...Ive been getting ready with my spoons and hopefully have something to report this week for the weekends conditions coz we are really looking good tide wise aswell...

  ..Ja ..Mike..I tell you what ...quite a few weekends in the past 10 months I would go down to my local spot(s) and stand and just shake my head in disbelief,,,I mean , for me not to even have ONE throw and then just walk back home tells you a story..


Dont get me wrong there has been fish coming out BUT very far n few between and it seems its only the off shore guys that were having any success during these times...
