Author Topic: A Good start up setup for surf dropshot/spinning? (Read 23905 times)

Hi

I hope to get some advise on what is a good quality startup rod and reel setup for surf dropshot/spinning. In the market to buy, not more than R2500 for rod and reel. i had a look at the Blue marlin theraptor and penn sargus 4000/5000, don't know if i'm going in the right direction? what to target cob/garrick and others.
I'll rather spend on quality, than to buying cheap with the hope that the equipment wont fail on me on the day.
only started surf & rock angling recently, trying to have lines in the water every weekend, blessed to have the stretch of coast from Glentana to Gouritz river at my doorstep. Now i only need the right equipment and to be at the right place at the right time to get properly hooked.

Off course alot of practise, like a said i'm new in the sport/way of life.

Advise would be appreciated and thanks in advance!

In that price range I would look at the Daiwa Excellor range of rods, I think you can pick them up for around R900-R1000. Im sure someone else will chime in with lengths and casting weights. Another option is the Shimano Vengeance, these rods are great value. You can pick up a 10 foot 1-3oz for about R500!

Reel wise Id consider upping the budget if you can and look at either the Daiwa Ballistic or Shimano Stradic. These go for about R2000 if Im not mistaken. Both are at the forefront of the new technology in reels but are also fairly reasonably priced

Hey guys, I have posted this before, just looking for more opinions. Whats you guys opinions on the shimano spheros? Sorry for hijacking but thought it might be appropriate.

The retrieve rate on the saragosa is a little slow for plugging from the shore so just keep that in mind when you decide

What is the major charateristic one looks for in a surf dropshot/spinning rod & reel setup?

i can see that retrieve rate is one of them.

Hey there

I have a Sargus 5000 paired with a blue marlin the raptor. Not that heavy into spinning but use the rod for plugs, paddletails, scratching and gallies. Throws a 3 ounce chizel a mile, and has alot of backbone. Even take it with to Roberg when the leeries are around.

If you gona only use it for dropshot, then rather get a 9 foot rod, but if its a multi purpose rod, maybe also have a look at the sensation dominator.

Like I said mine is not only for spinning, more of a multipurpose rod.

I'm talking under correction but think it only comes in 10'6. Maybe a bit long for a dedicated dropshot rod, but use mine for multi purposes. And with the 5000 size reel I'm a bit more comfortable when pulling chizels, a big leerie doesn't hit a chizel cos he wants to make friends lol.

Also caught a spotted gully on mine, and the rod handeled it fine. As for the reel in that price range I havent had a better reel. Built like a tank.

I find the 9ft 6" Exceler SW , matched to a Daiwa Caldia or Ballistic 4000 is a great combo for spinning , but over the top for D/S , and there the 8ft Daiwa crossfire rod , paired with a size 2500/3000 reel is great fun for the small stuff.
