Paindane 2013 Report
« on: April 25, 2013, 10:14:42 PM »
A bit late but here’s our Paindane report.

OK, so after months working on the new Yeld and getting everything sorted, the time for the first fishing trip eventually came up. On 15 March we slept over in Middelburg, left early next morning at about 4am. After 2 hours at the border and a VERY long day we eventually arrived at Paindane Resort at about 8pm. No problems on the way, and not once pulled over by cops. The next day we settled in and got everything ready for fishing. What a nice place:

The next morning we had some rain, waited and launched at about 10am. My wife and son was crew on the maiden trip. Here we were ready for the first launch.

The sea was flat. Got everything ready and lines went out. What pleasure fishing off the new boat! Too much deck space, storage, etc. compared to the duck I had. The sea was very dead, I started getting worried, but at 2pm we got the first enquiry. I took the rod, and landed a bonny. Not the best start, but at least broken the silence. Lines back in, now we were in business. Shortly thereafter my son was on with a yf tuna.

Some pandemonium, as I loaded the 2 tld20’s with new line and had a blond moment in putting too much line on. Ruben didn’t guide the line too well, so with the fish a good few meters out the line got stuck in the reel. Had to hand line the fish in, but got it on board. Now the big boat became smaller all of a sudden with loose line everywhere, and you know what’s next, yes that’s what I’m doing between the motors (nee ek maak nie voerplek nie), line in the props!

A bit rusty but some fish on board. Lines in again, not long before the next on. Now it’s my wife’s turn, first time fishing, she handled the fish good, but complained all the way. Me telling her, no man pull, it’s just a biggish bonny I’m sure, wind it. Eventually she caught a nice size yf tuna, 12kg. And did we hear about this fish for some time. She was the “top” tuna catcher for a few days.

We called it a day, and went out. Not the best of days but at least a start.

The next day it was me, a friend and our 2 sons. The first enquiry we had, Rudolf got a couta, and shortly thereafter it was his son Anru’s turn. He got his first couta and did a great job.

No luck further and we decided to give the Guinjata reef a try. After trolling some time we saw a school of baitfish jumping. Trolled closer, I had the flick stick with small spoon in hand, because we got some small bonnie schools earlier the day. When we got close I didn’t see any bonnies jumping, only small baitfish. I bought myself a new plugging outfit, it was loaded with a popper, and I decided to put the flick stick back and let’s give this new popping setup a try. Maybe something big is chasing these baitfish. Threw the popper, one pull, next pull, BANG! one big splash and I’m on. After a second or two, OH NO, feels as if the fish is off, reel in, ON AGAIN. We were still trolling, had to clear the other lines first. I was losing braid fast on my new sustain 10000. Eventually we went closer and I was starting to get some line back. Now it feels like a shark. Didn’t see the fish, just a splash. I thought maybe a shark took the fish when it felt like I lost it, but always hoping for a GT, eventually we got color, and it turned out to be a good GT. My second GT ever. Very happy, also with my new plugging outfit.  :happ:

Next was my son Ruben with a nice Barracuda. First one we ever caught.

The next day some more friends joined us and we didn’t go fishing. The day thereafter Andre and Allie joined me and Rudolf.

The weather unfortunately turned, and the wind picked up a bit. We tried very hard for 2 days but the fish didn’t come to the party. We only managed to get one triggerfish each day. Got one nice run but the line parted at the catspaw where the windon joined the  mono loop. Not sure what I’m doing wrong but this happened on my previous trip as well. I now used the modified cats paw, still same problem. That afternoon I cut all the windons and went back to the Albright which never failed me. Not lekker if you fish the whole day and your only strike is gone because of a knot failure.

After one day on the beach we tried again with new hope. It was also a slow day, we saw some small bonnie schools, and got a yf tuna. Also got one small bonnie which we used for bait, and produced a cuta.

The next day we had overcast conditions and some rain, but we decided to have a go, the weather prediction for the following few days didn’t look good at all. We trolled the shallows south and got one cuta. We then went deeper, also running away from the rain. A rare sight so far on the trip we eventually saw some birds diving, went closer and got a run. Allie’s son Ruan joined us for the day, he was first on the rod and got a very good size tuna for his first fish.

We struggled to keep an eye on the birds, went in and out of rain. Managed to find the birds again, went closer, and one, no two, then three rods went away. Said Rudolf must bring in his first. The third fish came off. Just kept tension on mine while Rudolf brought his fish in. Should have done it the other way around, because mine just swam in. Eventually we had 2 fish circling under the boat in any case, but we managed to land both.

Lost track of the birds, but just kept trolling in the area, we got another strike and Allie also got his tuna.

Was a better day, the tuna was between 12 and 13.8kg, and we at last all got bigger tuna than SWAMBO got the first day.

And while we were fishing for the fishbraai night, the basecamp girls took their basecamp duties very serious…

The south westerly then picked up with a big swell, so we didn’t go out for the next three days. We had a great time visiting Inhambane to stock up, also had a Guinjata pub crawl day, and just some relaxing on the beach enjoying Mozambique.

So after 3 days of wind, the next day we got on the sea, there were huge swells running, took an hour or two to get the sea legs again after few days “relaxing”. But after a hard day on the sea we eventually managed to get 3 cutas and a nice bonny for the gillie.

The last day came up, we went to the beach only to met a huge shore dump, was spring high. We parked on the beach and waited for the tide to drop.

We eventually put the boat in, was a bit rough but managed. We had a short day, also beached early to start packing, so only managed to get one small barracuda.

We packed and headed home early the next morning. We decided to go straight through to Vanderbijlpark. Some guys said the gravel road was good so we decided to give it a go, but with a boat it was not a good idea. I’m sure I would have done it faster through Maputu. The guys not towing did it in a better time. We again were not stopped by cops once. One of our vehicles was pulled over, and said the guy was speeding which he was not. Told them he didn’t have any money left going home, and they said he can go. All in all a great holiday, the fishing was not that good, but I enjoyed the new boat and I’m glad everything went good with her. We will be back for sure!

Hi Guys
I have also joined UA !!!!. Fishaholic was right Paindane was the best and with all our friends enjoyed it so much more. Although the weather was bad it will always be better than being at work. I deffenatly agree with the other guys Fishaholic outdid himself hope that all our reports would be done by him. Pertaining to the comment of Thys die Bosveld klong i have had a few people telling me that I look like him, but I am lacking the "los tong en baie praat".
