THAT BAIT NEEDLE IS THE ONE THE CARP GUYS USE WITH THE LITTLE HOOK ON IT
TAKE YOUR DACRON AND HOOK IT THRU YOUR CIRCLE THE BARB WILL KEEP IT FROM FALLING OF BUT.... MAKE A KNOT IN THE DECRON SO THAT IT DOENST UNWIND NOW GENTLY PUSH YOUR NEEDLE ABOVE THE MULLES EYE DO THIS VERY GENTLY SO THAT THE NEEDLE FINDS THE WAY THRU WITHOUT DAMAGING ANY VEINS WHERE THE MULLET MAY LOOSE BLOOD
WITH YOUR NEEDLE THRU THE MULLET HOOK THE DECRON AND PULL IT BACK THRU NOW VERY IMPORTANT YOU WANT THE HOOK FAR ENOUGH SO THAT IT CAN TURN EASILY INTO A FISH SO DANT PLACE IT TO CLOSE TO THE HAD ILL SAY IT MUST JUST BE IN FRONT OF THE LIPS
NOW HOOK THE DECRON THRU THE HOOK AND MAKE ANOTHER KNOT THEN JUST CUT THE REST OF THE DECRON OFF ABOVE THE KNOTS

DONT USE DECRON THINNER THAN 130 POUND THE THIN DECRON CUTS THRU THE HEAD WHEN YOU CAST
WITH THIS METHOD YOUR LIVIE STAYS ALIVE MUCH LONGER WITH NO BLOOD LOST AND NO MUSCLE DAMAGED

NOW RUN TO THE WATER AND CAST HIM IN TO LAND SOME FISH GOOD LUCK GUYS

Leker post , sure some guys will understand the livebait vibe better .

I , rig them otherwise , With that rig , I would assume you cant really have a clip ?

We use a needle to rig out Mullets , Single Circle or , Double J hook

Each to its own. w;k w;k

Sorry for the poor Pics , To cut a long story short , youlle need a   baitneedle . And 2 hooks I use KEndals , as theres a specific reason why   , I will get to that in a Minute . Hooks 0/6 to 12/0 .
Its important that the Hooks match the size Mullet U use .

The Pic with the hooks both Facing backwards sare the well known one , and works .
How ever ,years ago , we kept on missing fish and the older guys next to us , went VAS shot, for shot !
The   one guys showed us what they were doing , the last pick , the two hooks   facing towards each other , now I was super scetic about it , but ,   rigged my mullet , made a cast , and Boom VAS , landing a nice Kob on   Struis . Since them we cast  them like this , as you can also clip the   mullet .

How its done , you slide you back hook on your line   , you take your needle , and from where the X is on the back , you push   the needle in under the mullets skin , now slowly push the needle   underneath the skin towards the X near the head , exit you needle with   your trace here , you Tie on your Front hook , trim the tag end , and   pull the shank on the hook into the mullet underneath the skin [where   your needle came out ] your hook should stand proud ,you can 'lock' it   in place with a small piece of plactic worm /dropshot any small piece of   Plastic you can cut the torn up minnows and worms into pieces to use   for the above ...
You should decide , if you want to slide the shank   ot the back hook up into the Mullet , resulting in the hooks pointing   towards each other .
OR you can just hook it as normal in the back .
So   the reason I use Kendals is the Eye on the hook are nice and small and   does not do too much damage when pulling back up the skin .
Hope this help a lil

thnx Lenny, that's a good way of doing it,I would maybe just for sliding, enter the needle at the head first, going to tail,so that the back hook is the one that's knotted and front one slide on the hook-snoot,that way the live-bait will go forward s through the water....and maybe last longer :dunno: .Is the dotted line on the bottom pic where you'd cut the livies' tail for it to swim higher in the water...??Don't the livies' skin tear when you cast them using this method?

thnx for the post... (clap)

This is a great way of rigging livies.
We used it recently in Richards bay harbour. Your livie stays alive until something eats it. The one livie I used from about 8am to 2pm, while also moving a few times. When we had to pack up at 2pm due to inclement weather, I safely released the livie.
The previous day we caught a few small sharks, eels (on down rigged livies), etc. using this method. We also lost a BIG fish while using a bonefish, rigged this way, when the line parted.

No When the guys slide they use other methods , if you want to slide it the way you explained , the livie will die .
You can either trim the tail of the livie , at the bottom , so the livie will 'sit' high . or trip the top part and the livie will sit low . I prefer to trim the bottom when fishing over bricks , to keep it out of potencial snags , and over sand the top .
If done correctly , the skin of the mullet will not tear , This method has been use long long before Sliding was on the scene and long , long before the guys in CPT  started using slides to get their Livebaits out .
Plus when casting Livebaits your WILL get a pull whilst the other are still shaking thier rods .
Its VERY important that the hooks do not move , as in the beginning when you rig them you will see the hooks tend to turn , but with practise you will rig them perfectly , and you will go ON , shot for shot .

this can also be used to 'swim' your livie with a Bottle sinker thought Sandy gullies .

Oh and remember you can clip the livie , with this rig , and another advantage are that , the head points towards the sinker when clipped for a cast , hence you livie will not get so swr when casting . with the Livie pointing away from the rest of your Trace , it should limit tangles ect .

Lenny, please boet. When u are out there rigging up your livies again. Please take pictoral photos showing us exactly step by step. This sounds like a good method, but i'm trying to wrap my brain around how the fish is not hurt or killed by shoving a needle through its entire length of its body. Also the time factor out of the water rigging this trace.

it very important m that your go steady with your needle , just under the skin , and the flesh of Mr Mullet . you will feel you needle going through the skin , Mullet skin are tough , so if its done correctly you should not have any slipage .

will post some stuff , if I have my Camera and Livies together and have a small gap , as If we have livies , and fishign theres hardly any time for pics ect , I could do it with a dead mullet , just for showing you guys ?
