John F's DIY: Sinker clip for hi-speed trolling

I often troll at high speed from and to the fishing grounds, using my bullet lures.

To help keep the lures in the water I use trolling sinkers. Up to recently, I used the typical s/s multi-strand wire (+200 Lb) trough the cigar sinker with crimped snap swivels, etc.

I came up with this clip, which is very strong and will hopefully last me a lifetime.

Materials... s/s wire (1.2 mm), beads and ball sinkers (1 oz and 2 oz)...

Made a loop and inserted the ball sinkers and beads...

Bent the wire to form a loop

and voila...

Job's done and ready to fish!

Nice one (clap) .... now for the newbie question where does the sinker clip onto. Do you bend all this by hand or do you use a vice aswell.

It goes like this:
"Line from the reel - Double line - Snap swivel - loop of the trolling sinker clip - loop of the lure's leader.

Makes sense?

All done by hand. Use round pliers and long-nose pliers. Then side cutters! Takes about 5 min!

It depends on the sea conditions but usually it is between 12-18 knots. In those speeds and the size of the lures I place them quite far (+50 m) from the boat and only use 50 lb gear.

At those speeds I've caught YFT, couta and wahoo... I'm sure sailies and even marlin would attack a lure being pulled at those speeds if one is doing it in the right place. These fish can certainly move much faster than that. I mainly do it whilst traveling to and from the grounds... So I increase my chances of scoring... The strikes and hook ups are usually quite spectacular with long runs!

Never had a problem so far... The lure leader is usually 2-3 m...

Made a few more of these hi-speed trolling sinkers. This time (under request from peterblace) the sinkers are huge! about 400 gr. Manuel Junior casted the sinkers ( :+ cred: ) and below is a step-by-step pictorial on how to assemble it. Pics are pretty self-explanatory! Thanks peterblace for the pics!
