Langebaan outlook, 2nd weekend August
« on: August 10, 2010, 05:11:59 PM »
Allow me to give the report early this weekend as I know that some of my friends here are planning to visit the Baan and now that word has gone out that some catches were made, one can understand the reaction. If it is sharks that you target, then give the Baan  a skip this weekend, the water is still too cold and they are not here.Should you want to fish from the shore at Paaltjies or around the yacht club, then you might waste your time...why?The fish are at Spreeuwalle and also at Paradise beach next to Mykonos. But this time,I think some carefull planning and pondering must be done before you come...I will give a few things to ponder about...
*There is Kob and they prefer pilchard, not chokka or anything else. There are kolstert and good size Stumps and they prefer prawn and this time also long strips of cut pilchard.Make sure the pilchard is fresh.
*Many places at Spreeuwalle is totally covered with dirty green slime at the bottom that tangles around your hook like a spider web,,,so get that bait away from the bottom,at least half a meter away.Don`t even ask me why that bottom looks like this,I already suffer from high blood pressure! So rig your line with a sinker(one that can slide at least 500mm),the sinker at the bottom and the hook higher up...I leave it to you to work it out...
*The Stumps will take the line with force, simply because they feed in much colder water than most other species...but the Kob will take the bait so gently that you can hardly feel it.In fact with the wrong hook, you will strike the bait out of it`s mouth as it is basically only sucking on the bait and if it clamps down and feel the hook,it will spit it out.If it feels the sinker,it will spit the bait out...told you,you need to ponder...don`t even try to put the rod in a rod holder. The Kob are like this as the water temperature is still too cold and feeding is a secondary thing to them at the moment while they try their best just to stay alive in the cold water with their cold blood. But the wind direction is good and the moment the water temperature goes above 13 deg, some action can be expected.
*When fishing from a boat, then make sure that you anchor,do not drift as your hook will hit that slime.Do not cast away from the boat, just drop your line so that the sinker bumps on the bottom. But make sure you see some structure at the bottom. When fishing from the shore, then take some time to study the spot and ensure there are some ruff areas where you are going to cast.Gerhard and myself took time this week to think about how it worked last weekend,so I humbly suggest you take this advise.
*The slight breeze expected this weekend will go from north then change to south, typical this time of year when summer crawls in.Low tide will be after noon,so you might want to get prawn already on Friday, but I guess that with good pilchard, you might want to skip the pumping this time.
*So my friends enjoy the drive and appreciate the flowers with day temperature a nice sunny 22 deg...Go well and be blessed!
