Fishing report Durban 27 27 August 2012
« on: August 29, 2012, 09:38:43 AM »
Me and my brother in law launched from Durban Ski Boat Club at first light. There was livebait all over the place and we had enough within 20 minutes. Livebait rigs (yozuri's and sabiki's) worked well and we were hauling them in 4 at a time. We trolled south from the harbour mouth. Kona's rapala's and live-baits were trolled at varying speeds. Later we turned north again. We worked water from 20 meters deep up to 60 metres. Nothing. A complete blank. The last part of the trip we drifted with livies over structure, still nothing. So we ended up catching and releasing livies just for fun. There was a hell of a lot of plastic bags in the water which kept on fouling our konas and rapalas.

At least we saw dolphins, whales, a turtle and a shark. Also had a close up view of the helicopter dropping pilots on the deck of a huge container ship.

That night I called Mike from FA for some advice. He was very helpfull and told me where he got some YFT and suggested that we troll some feathers. It was nice talking to him again. Have some  :+ cred: Mike for helping a newbie again (and sorry for keeping you away from bed), he had had a long day on the water.

The forecast for Tuesday was very windy. We got to the beach while still dark and sat in the wind waiting for daybreak. We eventually launched but the chop was severe. Lots of livies again and we drifted them over some structure as I decided against going south as we had a NE wind that was going to pick up. At 08h00 we made a safety call to head back to the beach. We were hosing down the boat at the club when the wind really picked up and the sea got very rough, so we were happy to have made the call.

Negatives: We got no fish and conditions were not that good.

Positives: We made the trip. We are now comfortable dropping the boat on the sand and getting it back up on the trailer. We have more experience that will come in handy when we go to Ponta da Ouro for a week at the end of November. I got some screenshots of my Fishfinder that is bugging me, I hope John Easton will be able to give me his opinion on my perceived problem.

Thanks to everyone that gave advice. Now I just need to find out what feathers to buy. Please don't be shy in giving your opinions.

Hard luck Oelof, Durban is a tough place to fish if one does not know the area that well. Its not like going to Vidal and just heading to Oscars or Leven and you just about have success, at least you got to wet a line.
Good call on the wind too!

Williamson feathers are available in a few different sizes and colours.

Bad luck on the blank, Oelof! But at least you got some invaluable experience with your rig and had a safe trip testing everything out.
Even the best have bad days - it wouldn't be as much fun if you caught every time you launched, it would be like going to Checkers :hehe:

Some days are diamonds, some days are dogs! But a dog day on the water is still a good day! Good call with the weather, if your gut says it's time to go home listen to it.....

Hey Oelof, don't stress about the blank, its not a good time of year for game fishing and they are few are far between, the conditions were not so good and the water very cold, and besides you new and do not know any hot spots yet.
Next time you come down I am sure the fish will be running, you reels screaming, and on the good side you will know what to do and how you boat handles etc.

Thats the great thing about fishing, YOU LEARN SOMETHING EVERY DAY!!

Once you've stop learning, you've given up and stopped enjoying the sport.....

Never knock a bad day on the water, at the same time there was some unlucky chap sitting behind a desk!!

Thanks for the moral support guys. I'll be fishing in Ponta da Ouro for 5 days at the end of November. Maybe I'll break the blank then.
